Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/20/911.call.ap/index.html

A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence.

A woman's 911 call was interrupted by gunshots.

She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

4. There are some folks here ...
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 09:25 AM by DonP
... that believe that if she had been armed the situation could have been much worse. She might have shot back and injured an innocent bystander in the crossfire.

We've been hearing that same "logic" in regard to how horrible it would be if a qualified college student or faculty member was allowed to bring their CC weapon on campus. Somehow, I guess, it's easier for some folks to believe that allowing a one sided shooting gallery is better than allowing qualified people the option of defending themselves.

You're right though, even a second-hand $50 bolt action .410 shotgun with a round or two of #9 birdshot might have brought this to a very different ending.

Go figure?

5. You are correct of course but
It's easy indeed to find media reports of gun crimes by criminals every day - they sell papers that way.

It's nowhere near AS easy but not difficult to find media reports of defensive gun uses every day - at least those which the victim reports and which included actually firing, since these are at least good paper filler ("resident pointed gun at intruder who ran away" could probably show up every day in every city paper, but never does for that exact reason plus the lack of "sexy" injury details and criminal names).

But it's pretty damn difficult to find media reports of defesnive gun uses resulting in injuries to innocent bystanders every day because IT VERY RARELY FRICKIN' HAPPENS!

I mean weak arguments are not unheard of in this debate, frankly from either side, but the idea that using a gun in self defense is more dangerous to the innocent than not having a gun for self defense in the first place is pretty damn close to the top.

10. Good Thing
.......... there was no evidence of an accidental killing of a family member from an unsecured gun.

9. Too Bad You Don't Know Whether or Not She Had a Gun
The presumption that having a gun is a pre-requisite to safety is ludicrous.

Victim blaming is just what you can expect from the gun pandering lobby.

2. And here's the alternative story!
http://www.ktar.com/index.php?nid=6&sid=769113

A Peoria homeowner shot an intruder Thursday morning.

Peoria Police Public Information Officer Mike Tellef said the 62-year-old man heard someone breaking into his house near 85th and Olive avenues. Armed with a handgun, he went to investigate.

"He told us that he told the subject to stop," Tellef said. "The subject kept approaching on him, he felt in fear of his life, that's why he fired the single shot that he fired."

The 18-year-old suspect, Jason Rodriguez, a Glendale resident, was shot in the shoulder, and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he was treated and released to police. Rodriquez was booked into 4th Avenue Jail and charged with burglary and aggravated assault.

3. How much you wanna bet
that she wished she'd had a gun? Gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone any day.

11. How Much You Want to Bet
....... she doesn't think victim blaming of law abiding citizens isn't as important as prosecuting criminals.

13. How much YOU want to bet
that she wished she had a legal handgun where it would have done a lot more good than a phone?

6. Upscale neighborhood doesn't deter criminals nor does calling 911
Investigation continues in West Covina killing

The neighbors called it "The Castle," and when Hsiao Hsu and her husband moved into the multimillion-dollar, 6,000-square-foot compound in the hills near West Covina, they had fulfilled a dream.

"They loved that house," said Irene Marquez, a neighbor on Cameron Avenue.

The walled and gated residence also offered far more privacy and security than the ranch-style home they had left just two blocks away. The couple added security cameras. A sign out front read: "Warning: All activities are recorded to aid in the prosecution of any crimes committed against this facility."

On Thursday, those trappings of protection only amplified the mystery that surrounds the midday killing of Hsu, who was shot apparently while reporting a burglary to a 911 dispatcher.

8. Something very similar happened here in Corpus
last year. Same kind of neighborhood, same kind of house. Mother and son were unloading grociers and a homeless man comes in through the gate and right up to two with a knife. Takes mother and teenage son (by teenage I believe he was 13 or14) up to master bedroom and ties them up while he rummages through the house. They get loose, mother locks bedroom door and calls 911 while son gets dads .357. While mom is on the phone with 911 the bad guy comes back and is trying to break down the bedroom door when son puts a single shot through bad guys head.

So which one worked better here?
