An example of HOW NOT, to write a news paper article.
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 04:34 PM by virginia mountainman
WOW...Just WOW...And to think, people all over the US, will read this article. This just goes to show how out of touch Daley is..

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-chicago-police-assault-rifles,0,2104512.story

someone has a semi fully-automatic weapon

What is that?? I know of FULLY automatic, and SEMI automatic, but NEVER ONE OF THOSE??? Are you taking hints from Caroline McCarthy, and "her thing that goes up"??

Illinois State Police, Chicago SWAT units and other police departments around the country already carry high-powered assault weapons. He said the weapons will better match the Chicago police officers against criminals with sophisticated weapons, such as high-powered assault rifles.

High Powered??? That is one of the LEAST powerful center-fire rifle calibers, What a total dumb ass...

We're finding out that the weapons of criminals are getting bigger and bigger, AK47s,

Real AK-47's have been practically banned since 1939, I would not classify it as "BIG", a 12 gauge now THAT is big...

EDIT, Why would the Police need such weaponry, According to the VPC and Sara Brady, "so called" assault weapons are ONLY GOOD for ONE THING, Killing lots and lots of people, with spray and spray...So why would the Police need such rifles..

2. All gun-grabbers are not ignorant re firearms but it seems like the more vocal are grossly so.
Oh well, they are fun to read if they don't get carried away with diarrhea of the pen and use 100 words to make a 10 word statement.

3. a semi fully-automatic weapon?
What the F is that? A partly assembled full-auto perhaps?

The fact that, as you say, the AK-47 would be illegal under US laws anyway means that (surprise, surprise) making the thing illegal is not going to stop the people who don't obey the law in the first place. Also, the AK-47 is not especially powerful as assault weapons go, it's main selling point is it's simplicity and reliability.

And since "point and spray" weapons are notoriously inaccurate, I'd love to know what the cops want with them too.

Personally, I'm pro-gun rights (although I think some sensible regulation is in order).

9. Maybe a full automatic, that fails a lot?
:)

I do loose respect for a reporter who doesn't get things right.

Which explains why I've lost respect for so many reports of late.

10. Ha, know that feeling
It's getting to the point where I instinctively check news reports because so many of them sound like they come from The Onion.

4. I do not understand this part whatsoever:
"We're finding out that the weapons of criminals are getting bigger and bigger, AK47s, all types of different weapons, because they can carry assault weapons, it's not a violation of federal law, and that is a concern for all of us," he said.

- Criminals have guns......because they can......but it's not a violation of federal law -

Not sure what the point of this statement is.

5. It's typical FUD.
Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.

The idea is to paint firearms as scarily as possible to drum up support for banning them. It is the same bullshit that Bush did to drum up support for the "War on Terror".

If they told the truth about these weapons, like the facts that they aren't machine guns, they aren't that powerful, and that all rifles are hardly ever used in crime, it would deflate their entire cause in an instant.

11. Disagree
I actually don't think there is a long-range reason of that sort. I think it's just the usual sensationalism.

13. Daley has been stumping for banning these for years
Daley does have a long range, well known public agenda for more gun control.

He has 10 different gun control proposals in the state legislature right now, including one to ban civilian ownership state wide of the semi-auto version of the same gun he's handing out to his cops now. It's based on the AR platform and is the most popular target rifle in the country now. Well, at least it's the Chicago police with these and we all know how reliable they are about respecting civil rights and the rule of law.

Daley banned all handguns 25years or so ago by requiring registration then closing the registration. Just like DC.

The irony is two weeks ago, when the gangs were killing a lot of younger people, he made a speech about how; "More guns on the street never solved anything'. I guess what he meant to say was more guns on the street never solved anything ... unless my cops have them, then they are the perfect solution to crime. Just not for any citizen to defend themselves with.

Daly and Co. want to look like they are doing something against a force that really can't be feasably controlled....and they are doing this by grandstanding for more legislation

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/917216,CST-NWS-killing26.article

"Used by the U.S. Marine Corps, the M4 is an assault rifle that fires more shots in less time than a conventional handgun. The fully automatic version can fire up to 1,000 rounds a minute, although the magazines hold 20 to 30 shots."

Just watch out for the "spray fire"

Pistol grips on assault rifles and shotguns help stabilize the weapon during rapid fire and allow the shooter to spray-fire from the hip position. - bradycampaign.org

17. Perfect for Daley
""We're finding out that the weapons of criminals are getting bigger and bigger, AK47s, all types of different weapons, because they can carry assault weapons, it's not a violation of federal law, and that is a concern for all of us," he said."

Daley is concerned, really concerned, and why wouldn't he be? According to this article Chicago criminals are carrying "assault weapons", AK47's, presumably on the street. The streets of Chicago are rife with criminals "carrying" FA weapons and poor poor Daley, his hands are tied. He'd like to do something about it but he can't because the feds allow the perps to do so and trump his grand vision.

This article is full of so much BS it would be hilarious, were it not all too common. And personally I know many people who read this type of drivel and take it at face value. I long ago lost the assumption that I was being given news and approach every article or broadcast with the understanding that the "journalist" is attempting to feed me a load of opinion and ideologically driven propaganda. Whether it's from CNN, Fox, The Tribune or AP it's all the same.
