Philadelphia mayor takes gun control campaign to Harrisburg
Philadelphia mayor takes gun control campaign to Harrisburg
By MARK SCOLFORO

(AP)

Nutter, a Democrat who took office in January, told a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon that he was interested in "a different kind of dialogue," and that both sides have to be more realistic.

"I'm committed to working with anyone who is serious about this issue," he said. "And if we could, on both sides I guess, tone down some of the rhetoric, and be that much more direct and serious about how we discuss these issues, all of us will be that much better off."

His priorities include requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen weapons _ a proposal the state Legislature has resisted _ and reinstating a federal crackdown on assault weapons.

There is no legitimate reason to possess such high-powered weapons, Nutter said.

"Certainly they're not used for sport, they're not used for hunting, they're not used for target practice," Nutter said. "Because, quite honestly, the devastation these weapons were designed to create leaves virtually nothing left."

Unbelievable.

Is he repeating what he believes is the truth, having been misled, or does he know that the quoted things hes saying are out and out lies?

That question needs a real and truthful answer.

He wants to have a "a different kind of dialogue".

The truth of the matter, ought to be included in that dialogue, methinks.

1. He is a first class fucking idiot., and a liar...
He recently stated that he,"... Looked him (arrested cop killer)in the eye and said, "I'm so disappointed in you."" the shooter in question had many prior violent felony convictions, and many previous gun charges for which he was plea bargained down, and was released from prison several years early, just in time to steal a gun, rob a bank and kill a cop.ALL of the shooters involved in this crime should still have been in prison, one till 2025. The early release of violent felons has never been mentioned by Nutter or anyone in power in Philly.
FWIW, the Phila DA has repeatedly stated she would not enforce these gun laws because they are not legal according th the PA Constitution (Cities may not make their own gun laws.)
This man is a political hack, does not care about the existing law, is looking for publicity and using a murdered cop to get it.

2. Nutter's traveling salvation show...
"There is no legitimate reason to possess such high-powered weapons, Nutter said.

'Certainly they're not used for sport, they're not used for hunting, they're not used for target practice," Nutter said. "Because, quite honestly, the devastation these weapons were designed to create leaves virtually nothing left.'"

How many times can he be wrong (while on notice) before someone calls him a liar? The so-called "assault weapon" (actually a semi-automatic carbine) is not high-powered, but of moderate power, whose normal military round can be stopped by body armor. And the semi-auto carbines ARE used for sport with millions of Americans using them for long-range target shooting (low recoil, low ammunition cost). And they ARE used for hunting, especially when chambered for deer hunting cartridge sizes. The rest of his comments about "devastation" hardly make sense. A moderately-powered semi-auto carbine causes less "devastation" than an old Remington 742 deer rifle (semi-auto rifle chambering the powerful .30-06). And there's plenty of space left on a target.

With this kind of yee-HAH commentary, Nutter can hardly expect "a different kind of dialogue."

3. They are used in hunting, and they are used in sport.
They are also used in self-defense.

These are all legitimate uses.

More to the point, they are not illegitimate uses, which is the standard that I think needs to be applied here.

Wait another minute, doesn't Pennsylvania have the largest number of NRA members and gun owners of ANY state in the nation??...............

Well, at least he is named correctly...Nutter... I wonder what the fall out will be from his "dog and pony" show will be in November..With a local prominent Democrat talking about banning gun...

Good thing Pennsylvania is not in play this year....o shit....

6. misguided effort
going after the gun laws dont work- the key is to start from the bottom and build up- make crimes against the quality of life (grafitti, vandalism) real crimes with real punishments (like NYC did in the 1990's) and you will start to see a change for the good. You build up broken down neighborhoods, and encourage investment in city infrastructures- thats what New York did and look at us now...touted as one of america's safest cities

quality of life is everything
