Handgun-control measure fails in N.J.
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_stories/20090303_Handgun-control_measure_stalls_in_N_J_.html

The push to make New Jersey the fourth state with a one-handgun-per-month buying limit has stalled in the state Senate in the face of opposition from rural Democrats and a wall of Republicans.

Three South Jersey Democrats from rural areas bucked their party to vote against the plan, leaving it one vote shy of reaching Gov. Corzine, who has said he would sign the bill into law.

Twenty Senate Democrats supported the plan, with 21 votes needed for final passage. Every Senate Republican stood against the bill or did not vote.

State Sens. Jennifer Beck (R., Monmouth) and Bill Baroni (R., Mercer), who supported the measure when it passed the Assembly in 2007, said they could not back the bill now because a June U.S. Supreme Court ruling reaffirming a constitutional right to own handguns might render the plan unenforceable.

Democrats control the Senate by 23-17, normally giving them the power to advance bills without GOP support.

But the three Democrats from more rural districts who voted against this plan - Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney (D., Gloucester) and Sens. Fred Madden (D., Gloucester) and Jeff Van Drew (D., Cape May) - said their constituents' interests differ from those of the big-city Democrats pushing the proposal.

more important. I would consider living in the city if I weren't permitted to protect myself. Since seeing all the gun grabbing posts on DU I have decided to buy a semi-auto pistol and get a CC permit. You know the the gun grabbers have started a sales boom in handguns and all ammunition. Dealers will tell you they sell handguns as fast as they come in. So all this gun grabbing talk has actually been a blessing to gun manufacturers and the NRA.

8. I could really give a shit care less about internantional arms dealers...
The Constitution says I can have guns, and I live amongst redneck Republican/fundie fruitcakes. When one flips out shooting, I'll give him back some of what he dishes out.

13. You do know that the police have no duty to protect you, right?
So if you don't make your own health and survival top priority, who does?

Castle Rock v Gonzalez and a half dozen other decisions clarify that the primary responsibility for your protection and defense is yours, not the police.

I gotta say though, the idea of my little local gun shop supporting International Arms Merchants is a hysterical image all by itself. Which of those "merchants of death" sold them the last two Marlin Model 60's I bought?

10. Oh really? International arms dealers rely on Jersey shooters do they?
Brilliant work bud. And I am almost 100% positive that Chinese and Russian AK rifles are used overwhelmingly in conflicts the world over, dwarfing any use by American-made handguns. I mean dwarfing, like the way our sun dwarfs our planet.

12. International arms dealers?
Buying American made guns supports international arms dealers?
You are irrational. Calm down. Try thinking instead of just hysterically running down the road of irrational fear.

14. Our own government...
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 12:41 PM by dairydog91
...will most likely do more international arms dealing in one day than Joe Shmoe's Gunz could do in a century.

Edit: And if our government doesn't, then there's always someone at a Russian weapons depot who wants to make a buck.

16. Huh?

Arms dealers exist, and will always exist, because they provide a service that is in demand. Since man learned to make a sharp edge on pieces of flint, arms have been part of trade.

17. gun grabber hat on

Log on to DU's guns forum. Read about failed legislation that infringes on the 2nd Amendment. Foam at mouth, make irrational statements, wet pants. Repeat. Log off DU's guns forum. Load bong and take several deep hits. Change drawers, wipe spittle from mouth. Let heart rate return to semi-normal. Log on to DU and read the guns forum again. Repeat.

<gun grabber hat off>
