Armed police sent into action twice a week (UK)

New Home Office figures show there were 92 operations in which guns were authorised in 2007/08 across the county.

Police say the decision to send out armed officers was never taken lightly and an increase in fire armed trained cops showed the force’s commitment to tackling serious and organised crime.

Cumbria still has one of the lowest number of such incidents – the same number as the previous year.

Nationally there was a 17.5 per cent increase from 18,032 to 21,181 in the same period.

Separate figures also show the number of the county’s officers trained to carry firearms has increased from 90 to 97 in the same period
