interesting clip on the AWB and the mexican drug cartels
http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/bestoftv/2009/02/26/ldt.tucker.second.amend.cnn

the clip embodies what i have been saying about this whole issue, that these cartels are so well funded and control so much of the government that they have the resources to get weapons from almost anywhere. Changing our laws will have an insignificant effect on their killing sprees.

the only true way to fix this issue is the legalize drugs in this country, this would take away their prime sources of revenue

1. Of course it would be meaningless to change our laws about it.
The Russians would start selling them guns in a heart-beat. Given the low price of oil, they are hurting for additional revenue. The Russians have no problem supplying known terrorists, why should drug cartels be any different?

2. Yeah, the fact that ........
....this was given as a supposed "reason" for support of the AWB was totally absurd, and an irresponsibly stupid statement for Holder to make.

3. Holder...

I suspect he got his leash shortened a bit over that statement, and the "nation of cowards" thing. I believe we will hear our AG making far fewer unscripted pronouncement of policy. If he's reading a prepared statement, I'd listen very closely, but if he's just spouting off he's noise pollution.

The Mexican situation is going to escalate. The Cartels have grown more powerful than their host nation and they are spreading. How is it we can spend billions to kill the Mayor of Baghdad but we won't lift a finger to help the good people of Mexico?

4. The video was extremely interesting...
First it pointed out the difference between assault rifles and "assault weapons".

As discussed on this forum many times:

An assault rifle is a rifle designed for combat, with selective fire (capable of shooting either like a machine gun or one bullet at a time). Assault rifles are the standard infantry weapons in most modern armies, having largely superseded or supplemented battle rifles (which are similar to assault rifles but are larger and more powerful) such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and SVT-40.

Primarily limited to the United States, the term assault weapon is a political term, separate from the military definition, used to describe a variety of semi-automatic firearms that have certain features associated with military or police firearms, which are optimized for combat situations against human targets. The 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which expired on September 13, 2004, defined the rifle type of assault weapon as a semiautomatic firearm with the ability to accept a detachable magazine, and two or more of the following:

* Folding or telescoping stock
* Conspicuous pistol grip
* Bayonet mount
* Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
* Grenade launcher
* Barrel shroud

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle

Then the video pointed out that Mexico will not provide us with the serial numbers of the weapons that they feel came from the United States.

Things they make you go "hmmmm".
