Ammo gone from WalMart shelves
So I had to go out to the store today to buy some fluids for the car, and I promised my little girl she could come along and get a new toy. I also wanted to pick up a couple of boxes of 9mm ammo for the shooting range. Knowing I could get everything I needed with one stop at Walmart, to Walmart we went.

Walmart is basically sold out of ammunition. There was a fair amount of shotgun ammo, but other than that it was cases and cases of empty shelves.

4. Still part of the reaction to fear of Obama's "gun confiscation".
There is a version of the "new AWB" circulating that supposedly will ban nearly every type of rifle or shotgun other than single shot and all handguns. The AG of course has done nothing to ease these fears, although the liklihood of any type of Federal gun control law passing is nil, the antis still want to crow and act as if they still have popular support.

5. And ammunition manufacturers didn't need a stimulus package to make a profit. All it takes is a
statement "I believe in the Second Amendment. I believe in people's lawful right to bear arms. I will not take your shotgun away. I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away." followed by gun-grabber appointments as Chief of Staff, Attorney General, and Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

7. Gun sales have been up for 4 years now,
and probably the same with ammo.
For 3.9 of those years, that idiot bush was president, so tell me it's all about Obama.

8. People are stupid
They're falling for the Glenn Beck "doomsday" scenario where the gun in their hand will be their last stand. Actually, I think Beck is capitalizing on an existing view instead of the originator, but change is frightening for many, and people like Beck egg it on.

I have a friend who's been stocking up on ammo because he believes that's how the govt will control his 2nd amendment rights, and he'll need to protect his garden when Obama's failure causes anarchy.(?!) I told him that if he uses one bullet, he'll not need anymore ammo because he'll either be in jail, dead, or at least the neighbors will stay far away from "the crazy guy" with the dead body in his yard. I figured he could use his 1st victim as a scarecrow of sorts.

Another friend, a democrat who suddenly decided McCain looked pretty good last fall, sees a race war coming and is stocking up to "protect his family" in the end times. Remmington and Olin are laughing at him all the way to the bank, but I just roll my eyes.

Additionally, my youngest son (who is a collector) pointed out that military ammo has been in short supply (expensive) for years because of the demand in the Middle East. The govt pays top dollar, and allowances to the public have been curtailed. In his defense, he doesn't fear the future like the others, but always hoped to gain equity in his rarities as an investment (he's not "stocking up" on ammo and doesn't hope to shoot anyone).

It seems people are stupid, and crazy.

18. They're out there all right. They buy all the
ammo they can afford and a high cap weapon to squirt it out as quickly as possible. When the world ends and zombies rule the earth, those bullets won't last long. If anyone wants a doomsday self defense weapon, get a sword.

All it'll take now is for Michelle Malkin to blog about the possibility, and we'll have an increase in Renaissance Fairs and Museum robberies.

23. Zombies are highly overrated.
I'm finding it difficult to keep enough ammo around to maintain a minimum of 210 rounds. That's seven full magazines. If I were panic buying I guess I could pay whatever the market will bear but affordable ammo is nearly impossible to find locally. I'm still looking for one decent buy on a half case of 5.56. I consider 210 rounds a "lifetime" supply because if you're forced to burn through it all at once the odds are that you've stepped into a real problem.

I know guys with "ammo forts", as in they have it stacked high and deep. If they're forced to take to the hills how do they think they'll carry it all?

26. Heh. You got it.
I wonder how many of those guys were in the military and actually had to carry all that stuff around with them? I read an article the other day about how soldiers are badly overloaded, 100 pounds or better, and are suffering injuries because of it.

Retail therapy can take many forms.

It is too bad that they sell toy guns for kids to "play" with. They get they idea alright. Bang bang and you are dead is the idea.

I think that guns should not be sold as toys for children. In fact, I don't think guns should be sold as toys for adults either. This is what they are, toys for big boys and girls.

They serve no purpose but to make a person feel like they have some sort of power. :eyes:

25. Never happen.
I think that guns should not be sold as toys for children.

My parents were adamant that they would not buy me toy guns as a kid.

I think I was about 4 years old when I started shaping sticks into guns.

Since the beginning of time little kids have played at being the great soldiers of their day and days past. From toy swords, to toy "Peacemakers", to toy M-16s, to toy laser rifles, kids will want to emulate the great warriors of their age.

27. The day...
I got my first real rifle, the toy guns all hit the trash can never to be seen again. I must have been around eight. I got to shoot the rifle maybe once every month or so with my Dad. The rest of the time it was kept locked up with the ammo in a separate container. This was back in the sixties before child safety seats, unleaded paint, and bicycle helmets.

My kids don't show much interest in toy guns. In a few years I'll start shooting with them if they are interested. Right now I'm too busy trying to get them to learn and appreciate music.

28. Not mine.
With toy guns, I and the neighborhood kids were always pretending to be shooting at each other. This is something I would never do with a real gun. I played with toy guns for a few years after getting a real one.

24. Nope, she is only 3.
She's only 3 years old - I won't buy her her first gun probably until she is 10 years old or so. It depends on maturity more than age. I got my first .22 when I was 11.

No, it was some icecream truck toy. I think she picked it because it had a little puppy dog that came with it.

29. Fear they'll do what they said they'd do.
Even though the congress has shown little interest in reinstating the AWB, people have a legitimate reason to be a little nervous considering our President and AG have little respect for firearms ownership.

There is a genuine fear that an AWB won't pass but instead they'll attempt to tax firearms and ammunition out of the reach of many or put asinine regulations such as microstamping into play.

17. Two driving factors...
1) Fear of Democrats and draconian gun laws.

2) Fear of the economy sliding into a "Great Depression" and "The end of the world as we known it." (Remember the fear that the change to the year 2000 caused.)

21. Gander Mountain in Pittsburgh area had ammo
Edited on Sun Mar-15-09 11:29 PM by RamboLiberal
though not in the quanities they usually have. They are limiting customers to a 2 box limit. I picked up a 9mm 100 round White Box Winchester near $30.

The other thing the hoarding fools are doing is keeping the price high. With the drop in metal prices ammo should've been coming down in price.

22. In one Dallas, TX area
A lot of ammo is gone not only from Walmart, but also some Academy and Sports Authority establishments.

All I could find at Academy is some of that cheap Russian FMJ they won't let me shoot in my local range.

9mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .357 Mag, .38 Special, .223, even .380 ACP, what you would call standard ammo is gone...gone...GONE.

And so called assault rifle looking items are selling like hot pancakes.

Damn.

Thank you Obama/Holder...I think.

Xela
