All spent military brass to be destroyed.
Did anybody else hear about this? I am just catching up now. I am having trouble finding actual sources but it seems legit.
Recently somebody int he new administration made a new rule so that all spent brass had to be sold to scrap yards who promised to shred it, no more sales to civilians.
Then there was a huge backlash. A letter writing campaign to govt officials, and now the companies who reload ammo and sell it are getting the word that the decision has been reversed and the brass will be available again.

1. I believe brass is not destroyed, just crushed so it cannot be used for reloading.
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 08:00 AM by jody
ON EDIT ADD
My statement about "crushed" is correct but in retrospect that is "destroyed" in the sense of not being useful for reloading.

IMO the process of crushing "brass", i.e. the case remaining after a round of ammunition is fired, is a covert attempt by the gun-grab community to prevent law-abiding citizens from exercising their natural, inherent,inalienable/unalienable right to keep and bear arms for self-defense.

Prime movers in the gun-ban community are VPC and the Brady Campaign funded by the directors of the Joyce Foundation and the Annenberg Foundation.

2. The internet is going to save the 2nd amendment.
If this had happened without the internet, it would have just happened. 18 months from now all the mil caliber brass would be all dried up, prices would be skyrocketing, we would be just starting to get a glimmer of what happened, and it would be too late. It would be over.

16. 100% correct. Information is indeed power. As is the ability to communicate.

4. DoD reverses mutilation requirement for spent brass
From Georgia Arms:

"A hardy congratulation is due to our loyal customers, our good friends, and our fellow shooting enthusiasts through out this great nation! Due to the diligent and overwhelming effort of many thousands of you, calling, writing, and emailing our elected officials, DOD Surplus, LLC, has rescinded its prior directive that ALL small arms spent casings be mutilated rather than recycled. This was a huge victory for common sense and we would like to thank each and every person who made an effort and played a role in correcting this mistake. We at Georgia Arms are proud of everyone who took the time and had the courage to stand up for our rights. We believe, that by your outpouring of anger and dismay, you not only extended our liberty and freedoms but also took a stand for economic common sense in a time when we know our government should be trying to reduce costs at all levels rather than throwing money away for some politically correct reason or the other. Again, our hat is off to everyone who helped and thanks to God as well. We will roll up our sleeves and go back to work; we have 223’s and 308’s to build! "

I can't imagine what would have happened to the price and availability of ammunition had this new DoD policy been allowed to be implemented. Its already obvious how this new admin intends to treat the 2A.

6. This administration has been pretty
straight forward about the second amendment most of the time. President did say he would support the 2nd in the most minimal of ways during his campaign. The rest of the time he has been openly hostile toward private gun ownership.
I actually think he could have been honest and he would have still been elected.

15. They're responsvie.
That's for sure. The previous ruling junta would have denied the order took place and then made up some crapola excuse about National Security to defend their rationale. I'm encouraged, if not entirely confident in their desire to protect all my Constitutional Rights.

28. Already happening just on the panic form their first announcement-
nearly all .223 and .308 ammo has become impossible to find. Even Walmart is out of it (I bought the last box of .308 ammo from my local Walmart yesterday - they can not keep it on the shelves - whenever some comes in, it is purchased the same day.

This announcement and the story in Newsweek may help ease the fear of the Obama administration confiscating/banning guns and the resulting buying/ stockpi;ling of weapons we have seen since November.

I have no sympathy for the RWers at all, and I don't care if they spend their rent money on ammo, but I'd l;ike to be able to get what I need for a somewhat reasonable price, and this may help.

5. DoD reversed itself as of last night.
There has been a real feces storm for the last week over this.

Responding to two Democratic senators representing outraged private gun owners, the Department of Defense announced last night it has scrapped a new policy that would deplete the supply of ammunition by requiring destruction of fired military cartridge brass.

I'll never be able to afford .223 and .308 ammo, except maybe for dirty shitty wolf ammo. I really hope the decision is reversed.

20. I'm scared... ban them!
It's not particularly suitable for sporting use! That black finish, the tactical sling, the red-dot scope... and is that a large ammunition feeding device slipped over the buttstock???

What's next, bayonet lugs and flash supressors???

Oh the humanity!

21. COMPLETELY off-topic
If you look at the "title" tags on the actual PNGs of the xkcd comics (usually just mouseover and hold for a second, at least on a Mac) you get an extra comment or quip...the one for that strip reads "Correlation doesn't imply causation, but it does waggle its eyebrows suggestively and gesture furtively while mouthing 'look over there'"

Some of them are better than the strips IMO.

(and no, CDNIC!)

22. I noticed that when I first discovered XKCD...
Of course, I noticed this about five comics from the end of the series, so I had to go back to the beginning and re-read all the of them, only this time with the mouse hover!

I was into it for about two months before I ever noticed, I didn't even have the luxury of five comics to go :)

"Plowshares Beaten Back into Bullets
SHOCK and AWE...

The tentacles of the internet reached out and pulled the Brotherhood of the Gun together, launching a massive strike.

An electronic impulse that may have mirrored a sunspot hit Washington, DC as gun people everywhere called and e-mailed their congressional delegations......"
