Youth pastor accused in bullet ricochet
Boulder County sheriff: Shooting complaints a growing conflict

By Heath Urie
Tuesday, March 31, 2009

A group of target shooters learning gun safety outside of a Boulder County church is accused of ricocheting bullets into a residential area

Snip

When deputies arrived at the church, they found Pastor David Vidal, 29, of Frederick, along with his children and Brendan Winans, 21, of Broomfield, shooting at a makeshift target behind the church.

They were firing a 9mm handgun, a .40-caliber handgun and a .22-caliber rifle, according to the report. A deputy noted "there was nothing behind the wooden stand or anything to stop the bullets."

The group was given a verbal warning; no tickets were issued.

I think the "Youth Pastor" needs to learn some firearm safety.

5. No, stupidity = stupidity.
This is the firearms equivalent of taking a Hummer off-roading and rolling it over trying to climb rocks.

8. irrational fear and continually bashing = not productive at all
The pastor was an idiot for not taking to account the utmost need for safety when discharging a firearm. Luckily no one was injured. I think harsher consequences were in order. However, constant emotional ranting is not productive. Given that there are over 300,000,000 firearms in this country in the hands of 80,000,000 people, and that the injury and death rate is less than that of automobiles, swimming pools, ladders, etc... does such vehement ranting make sense?

Scenario: You are at home with your family. You hear a noise downstairs. You check it out and find that two armed men are in your home they see you too. Police response time at it's fastest is 3-7 minutes. How do you propose to keep yourself and your family safe during the time in which the police can respond?

2. Youth Pastor failed rule number 4.

1. All guns are always loaded (until you establish whether they are or not).

2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. Keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times: on the range, at home, loading, or unloading.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target (and you are ready to shoot).

4. Be sure of your target. Know what it is, what is in line with it and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you haven't positively identified.

6. Who's the biggest threat to 2nd ammendment rights?
Backyard popshooters like this - they terrorize whole neighborhoods at times - and slob hunters.

7. Agreed.
I just think it is pathetic that they were claiming to be teaching gun safety. They could have went to the gun range that is on the other side of Boulder.

10. You are right.
I think that more should have been done in terms of a consequence. A warning is not enough. There is extremely little room for error when discharging firearms. Every responsible owner knows this. Idiot!!

Especially at a time when so many irrational, scared people are advocating for restriction of the right to own and carry firearms, we all need to make sure that we aren't doing stupid things like this.
