ATC reports ammunition shortage blamed on Obama's election.
"Around the country, there is a shortage of ammunition used in many types of firearms. Some attribute the shortage to the election of President Obama, and fears his administration will usher in more restrictive gun laws. Johnny Dury, owner of Dury's Gun Shop in San Antonio, says the ammunition shortage began the day Obama got elected."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102851807

Dury says people at his store are buying a lifetime supply of ammo. This shortage brought on by the fear of a Obama crackdown on weapons, coupled with the military's demand for ammo for two wars, is depleting supplies of ammunition all over the country making it hard for the police to stay sufficiently supplied. Considering all the dead and wounded citizens and police officers piling up, I'd say this is a pretty scary development.

Dury says people feel that all this socialist talk of taking over the banks, taking over the oil companies, giving money to people who don't work hard, is making people feel they need to protect themselves. If criminals know people aren't armed that'll make it just that much easier for them.

Asked how business was today he replied, it's just a regular "post-Obama day."

You know that Hussein Obama, he's giving all our money away to the lazy people who don't want to work.

No need to worry about all those trigger happy right wing nuts with arsenals in their bedrooms waiting for the police to come knocking.

6. What does that mean, "lifetime supply"?
At what rate of consumption? Going to the shooting range every week? Or fighting a protracted civil war (as some are advocating)?

Walmart and Academy here usually sell out a delivery of pistol ammo by 9:00 AM on the day of delivery.

9. It's SWAT
I saw a rather convincing article that attributes much of the current shortage to the proliferation of SWAT type teams everywhere. Campus police, large facility security forces, and just about any police/sheriff's department anywhere has a SWAT type team these days. And that requires training and retraining. The article suggested 300 round per certified member per year. It isn't the 2 wars, the military have their own sources of supply. Yes, there is a "run" on ammo at the local stores, but it isn't anywhere near large enough to have caused the shortage. But the retailers don't mind "selling" that concept to keep the customers coming in.

short supply. When they get a shipment in it is gone immediately. I saw three 250 round boxes of 9mm and two 250 round boxes of .45 ammo on the shelf at Walmart a couple weeks ago I checked back about 10 minutes later and they had all been sold. Cabelas had a sale add for April 2 on 9mm, .40 cal. and .45 cal. I made it to the store about 2 hours after they had opened and they were all gone.

yeah...it becomes cost effective if you shoot a ton every year.

The real appeal in reloading is in the quality control you can achieve. I compete and am keen on maximized accuracy for my guns, so hand loading is of great interest to me.

22. If you want to get in a great deal of practice very cheaply get an airgun
It costs less than a penny per shot if you buy pellets in quantity through the web.

I can hit a dime pretty reliably (once I'm sighted in) at fifty yards with my Benjamin Discovery Precharged Pneumatic..

At short ranges a quality airgun can be even more accurate than a firearm.

I shoot my Crosman Mark II and my Baikal IZH-46M pistols indoors at home a lot, I have a pellet trap that uses two layers of heavy carpet.

32. i think in a couple of years when people finally wake up
and realize Obama has not grabbed the first gun despite all the RW radio predictions, there will be an IMMENSE secondary market in guns and ammo as people dump their stockpiles on the cheap...

Personally, I'm curious why this is still a story...The "people buying up all the ammo and guns" story (along with the related shortages) has been in the news every week since January...It's not like anything has changed since then...

you can use ammo. it also tends to last forever if stored properly.

if someone bought too much ammo I doubt they would sell it cheap just to buy it back for more in smaller batches over next 10 years.

42. I shoot maybe 1000 - 2000 rounds a year some people I know shoot 5000+
So say someone goes way way way overboard and buys 50K rounds.

If he shoots 2500 rounds a year thats 20 years worth.
No me personally I will just buy 1000 at a time but regardless the guy has bought all his ammo at once.

Rather than buy 2500 every year for next 20 years he is loaded up.

The thing about ammo is if it is well made, kept dry, and not subject to a lot of heat or vibration it essentially lasts forever.

I have shot ammo that was 60, 70, even 80 years old.
Worst case scenario give it to your kids.

Ammo tends to keep getting more expensive (even before the "Obama scare").
I kinda wish I had gone "crazy" and bout 10K 9mm & 10K .45 a couple years ago.

The war in Iraq, rising fuel prices (shipping), and rising cost of metal has caused ammo prices to triples.
That is BEFORE any scare based run up.

To protect them from "criminals" who know they have no ammo? But wait, the criminals *do* have ammo? But there's no ammo! How'd they get ammo?!

I get confused by insanity sometimes, you see...

If they're so hardcore why don't they just learn how to kick the shit out of the "criminals" who are coming to take whatever crap they have that is so precious to them? You can learn to disarm a person with a gun.

Maybe they're just too "lazy".

There was a "shortage" of 223 brass, a very popular cartridges, they drove the prices up people horded. Now they've changed the game and it's primers, drove the prices up and people are hording. What is going to be next? This is all a game to them, they are laughing all the way to the bank.

They have many of the gun users afraid they'll see their guns and ammo banned or significantly restricted, and that has caused on run on ammo. Even police departments are experiencing delays in getting ammo, as a result.

The few ammo producers have been filling military contracts for the last eight years. That does not leave much line time for the civilian market.

The press has taken notice now only to see the civilian demand rise slightly higher than previously.
