BBC-Right-wing groups 'growing' in US
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 02:42 PM by Xela
"Some moderate conservatives fear the administration could use the report as an excuse to tighten gun laws and restrict freedom of speech."

(after a couple of failed attempts at edit)

As an independent liberal, I'm also concerned about how the administration may react. I don't think this is a right-left issue as the BBC paints it.

1. Oh dear
Of course, these same people that wanted to have Liberals hung for exorcising their speech will insist that lynching liberals is just exorcising THEIR speech, which is the only one worth anything, being that they are WASP's. I do not want them to be made martyrs like good old David Korresh, but frankly, they need to learn that if they threaten violence, we can hit back. It's all nice to play the role if Martin Luther King, but sometimes you have to play the role of Malcolm X or Huey Long to let them know you mean business.

2. anti-veteran bias
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report sent to law enforcement that lists veterans as a terrorist risk to the U.S.

This has the American Legion and VFW upset. Kind of goes along with Carolyn McCarthy's push to have all military and VA health records as part of the NICS check.

3. Crisis brings out the extremists
Whenever there is a substantial shift in policy or major economic downturn, the reactionaries always come out. The best fix for that is to stay the course, respect freedoms, and hope that prosperity returns soon enough to neuter those voices. Unfortunately if the Obama administration over reacts for the sake of security, then they will feed into the fear that is already festering among the ranks of the right wing. It will be like an unhealthy cycle which unfortunately will be called for by people who think that the government has to provide absolute security. It is a difficult situation which I hope is handled intelligently.
