Obama is buying up all the ammuniton for his private militia
That is why there is an ammo shortage. I heard this said in all seriousness at a gun range today.

It's not private citizens hoarding. Nope, it's Obama preparing for his facist takeover of the country.

Amazing bizarro world.

11. Here's one thing they were blaming Obama for
Some bureaucrat at DOD decided expended military brass which businesses that reload use to manufacture & resell (from what I understand a lot to Law Enforcement for practice ammo) decided in national security interests it was to be destroyed. The ban is now lifted.

Georgia Arms have updated their website:

Dear Loyal Customers,

Thanks to your voice, DOD has rescinded the order to mutilate all spent cases as of 4:30 pm on 3/17/09. We appreciate the time and effort that you expended, together we all made a difference. We will be posting the email we received from DOD as well as any additional information within the next 12-16 hours. Thanks so much and lets get to work!!! Georgia Arms

This post on ar15.com is apparently by an employee of Government Liquidation:

Tromatic is actually pretty close with his assessment. The facts as I know them, which come directly from candid discussions with my CEO, indicate the following:

- Prior to 11/2008, Demil B items required no mutilation for sale to the public. That policy changed in November, but several exceptions were granted. Expended munitions brass was one of those given a waiver.
- Enter the new administration. Since Demil B category items had been given a broad, general label as “national security sensitive” someone above the DRMS (likely in the DLA) reviewed the policy and immediately went with a CYA policy and yanked all exemptions. No thoughts or considerations were given to the implications of this policy change, but this directive was issued to DOD Surplus effective immediately last week.
- Shit storm blows up as a result. In particular, the letters, phone calls, and emails to our legislators, the media, and anyone else who would listen caused this policy to be review post haste.
- As of this morning our company was informed that expended munitions brass will now be reclassified as Demil Q –– which requires no mutilation unless sold to a foreign country.

There you have it. The policy change was simply the result of some n00b administrator attempting to close a perceived “national security” loophole and brass got caught up in the snare. There was no political motivation behind the policy change, but it is good that people like us were suspicious, got involved, and helped bring about a resolution.

14. Back in my shooting/reloading days...
...I seem to remember that military cartridges weren't suitable for use by civilian reloaders because the military used a different primer in its shells, a primer that required special tools to replace. Have things changed?

By the way, the paranoia of the gun people has caused me to move to a much more aggressive stance on the need for gun regulation--just so you'll know.

Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 06:01 PM by BigBluenoser
"berdan" primer it is called. From what I can see in a quick search, the US military does not use it (one of the few who do not).

Cheapo 9mm ammo from Monarch (aka: The Russian Love - sold by Academy) also comes with this stuff.

16. Military brass can be reloaded, but requires some effort and care...
A note on G. I. brass. Once fired military brass will have a crimped in primer that must be removed before you can reload it. Use a decapping die to remove the primer, and then you can remove the crimp by either a handheld reamer, or a machine that swages the crimp out, available from Dillon Precision. Also military brass is thicker than commercial brass, so internal space is smaller. Reduce loads by 5% when using G. I. cases. You may have to use a small base sizing die to resize military brass that has been fired in a machinegun, as these weapons have larger than average chambers to insure feeding.

This is fairly technical info, far beyond the ability of the average gun control advocate to comprehend. However, you did mention that you did some shooting and reloading.

I can understand your feelings toward gun owner paranoia. I am curious as to how you would change gun regulation.

22. I think the vendors are inhibited by the same stuff inhibiting the rest of the economy.
If it is hording by individuals, how come I can't find any .45 Long Colt for my cowboy rifle? It's not exactly a self defense weapon. I can see hording fighting calibers, but cowboy bullets? It's the credit crunch, the inability to make payroll, the cost of materials and the fact that manufacturers are focusing on military needs.

23. Oh it's hoarding as well
I stopped at 3 Gander Mountains & Cabela's over the weekend. There were some calibers in stock but very little in defensive caliber ammo for handguns. Nothing in 9mm except for a few lonely boxes of hollowpoints. Gander Mountain when they do have stock are limiting customers to 2 boxes per day.

I was reading a lot of the gun forums - there are stories of people going to WalMart when they know a shipment has come in and buying every box that has come in.

There are emails out there circulating in the gun world about high ammunition taxes coming, serial numbers on casings or bullets coming, the hordes will invade when the economic collapse comes, etc.

I can't figure out why they are stocking up on FMJs though. I'd figure they should be going after the hollow points more.

I've never seen store shelves so bare.

I will admit though I think the ammo manufacturers got caught not expecting this demand. And except for Black Hills they probably don't want to expand their production capacity with the Iraq War winding down and knowing that the civilian demand is probably a short term bubble. So they are going 24/7 on existing production lines or doing overtime for now.

I'll be curious when it catches up. I'm reading that gun prices on places like Gunbroker.com are slowly dropping again after peaking on "assault weapons".

I can at least sit back and relax at the idiocy for now since I just scored a stock of 9mm ammo at a good price today from a local commercial reloader. Had to take a 100 mile round trip to pick it up while he had it in stock. Lucked out that they just produced a new batch.

I'm pissed at the idiots cause I'm an IDPA shooter and I was having to consider how I spent my ammo at matches and this is the season for it in my neck of the woods.

I can't explain the cowboy calibers unless the SASS shooters are doing a bit of hoarding.

...the price was going up for the past four years. I still have PMC .357 mag marked <$12 a box.

I don't think there ever was much .45LC or .44-40 in stock in the first place.
