Media lunacy and ATF lies - Chicago, where else???
News segment shows reporter firing full auto "AK-47" and ATF agent Andrew Traver says there are the guns available to street gangs.

Is there any limit to the media's idiocy and ignorance?

And what about this lack of integrity displayed by ATF SA Andrew Traver?

1. Are you saying the guns aren't available to street gangs?

2. If they are, they are being smuggled in from another country.
They are not being bought in gun shows or gun stores.

3. Watch the story that aired . . click the "WATCH THIS" tab . . .
Not the full auto model the reporter was shooting and the ATF agent said could empty a 30 round magazine in 3 seconds and that was "the stuff like this available to the gangs."

4. It won't play. My firewall might be stopping it.
But again, people have these guns.

5. That is full auto.
Maybe that's what you meant. Full auto is super-rare, super expensive. It's either a registered NFA weapon, worth tens of thousands, or something smuggled into the country illegal, or a significant modification.

Few, if any, street thugs are rocking full auto weapons. Hell, the LA County DA never saw a converted AK-47 in his entire career of confiscating and prosecuting these punks. In LA of all places.

If they think 7.62x39mm is 'heavy caliber', I'd hate to think what they'd call my stuff.

7. Correct, not bought at Gander Mountain or Cabela's
At the 1:15 mark of the video, notice the "3rd pin" above the magazine release, dead givaway. That's a genuine Russian or Bulgarian milled Type 3 machine gun, if Russian it could easily fetch more than your average NFA AK.

Funny yet sad how they shamelessly show the store video of the murderer purchasing a garden variety semi, but constantly shove the range time with the full-auto into the viewers mind.

11. It's a real AK alright, but worthless

As the property of a Federal agency it is most definitely not registered on a Form 4 and thus not transferable to a mere citizen.

Further, trying to point out that the "third pin" indicates the gun started out life as a real AK, and milled that it was an AK-47, not and AKM is wasted on those who would soil their britches no matter if it was an Airsoft or a water gun. It does not matter to the breathless reporter, or her agenda if it's real, a conversion done by the ATF's Firearms Technology Branch. It served its purpose by just being scary-looking and recognizable from thousand of images from movies, newspapers, the Web, etc. Mass fire; spray from the hip bullet hose; with high capacity, mega-death, heat seeking, cop-killer bullets; 'go up shoulder thingy' assault weapon, sold at gun-shows to Mexican drug cartels and at McCormick Place to south-side Chicago school-kids.

Much legislation and what passes for public policy are underhanded and cynical attempts by politicians wanting to be re-elected by making stupid people feel better. Nothing like ill-considered, useless and symbolic crap designed only to convince morons that somebody is 'doing something' about some problem.

What more proof do you need than the TSA and the Patriot Act?

10. "Inherently, they're almost impossible to control." That elicited a derisive snort.
For her next segment, maybe Ms Vatis could demonstrate how cars are "inherently almost impossible to control" by trying to operate one with her right leg propped up on the dashboard.

Yes, if you tuck the stock under your armpit, where it isn't braced against anything, instead of setting it against your shoulder like you're supposed to, an automatic weapon is going to be rather difficult to control. It doesn't help if you don't lean into the recoil, either. But somehow, more than 60 drafts of Soviet conscripts managed to get the hang of firing the AK on automatic, as did many members of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the People's Army of Viet Nam, the Cuban Revolutionary Army... the list is extensive.

AGENT TRAVER: Problem with a weapon like this is that it will defeat virtually all body armor.
Actually, it won't defeat level III (capable of stopping 6 rounds of 7.62x51mm NATO round, which is more powerful than 7.62x39mm Russian) or level IV (capable of stopping one round of .30-06 M2 armor-piercing) body armor, but that's just nit-picking, right?

12. Not surprising at all.
The current US veteran population, including non-combat veterans 24,387,000 according to the US Census Bureau.

The entire US population is 304,059,724. So you can say that roughly 92% of the population have ZERO first hand knowledge of REAL MILITARY WEAPONS. The draft ended in 1972, so those with even just a conscripts rudimentary knowledge are pretty rare. That is easily borne out by the fact that the median age of all veterans living in the United States is 57.4.

So why should we be amazed that when unrealistic and stupid public policy gets made by people whose sole understanding of weapons effectiveness is predicated on Hollywood special effects?
