Here is another idiot that needs to go to prison......
Father charged in son's accidental shooting

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- A Tarpon Springs man has been charged with culpable negligence, five months after his 6-year-old old son shot his 3-year-old brother.
Police arrested 35-year-old Rockny G. Carpio on Tuesday. He was later released on $2,000 bail.
The family was living in Clearwater in February, when the 6-year-old found a semiautomatic gun in the father's bedroom. The child accidentally shot the 3-year-old in the chest. The younger boy survived.
Investigators found several unsecured firearms in the home.

1. It's such a simple concept...
If you're carrying a firearm, whether it be a rifle or shotgun during a hunting soiree or a concealed pistol on the mean streets, then you keep a round loaded in the chamber. Otherwise, when the gun is stored away, you keep the gun unloaded with the safety on at all times. If the gun will accept a secure trigger lock, by all means, use one. That's what I do.

This simple attention to detail would be enough by itself to prevent many of these tragic accidental shootings.

2. I 100% agree. The worse part was "several unsecured guns"

3. You say this as if someone might disagree with you.
Owners are responsible and should be held accountable.

Was there another point you wanted to make?

5. Responsible gun owners secure their firearms ...
to prevent access from children. Hiding a firearm in your bedroom when you have little children is inexcusable.

Many methods to secure firearms exist. Project ChildSafe offers kits available at many distribution centers. Details can be found here:

http://www.projectchildsafe.org/tours.cfm

An excellent article called "Keeping Guns Away From Little Hands" can be found at:
http://corneredcat.com/Kids/kidstorage.aspx

Obviously, a firearm dedicated to self defense has to be easy to quickly access. Lock boxes are readily available and not extremely expensive.

First Alert makes one available at Amazon.com for $37.99

http://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-3035DF-Digital-Security/dp/B000MPO6OY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1281035185&sr=8-6

Amazon.com also has more expensive lock boxes.

Stack-On Strong Box Safe - Electronic Lock $83.99
http://www.amazon.com/Stack-Strong-Box-Safe-Electronic/dp/B0000C7GL6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1281035185&sr=8-7

Gunvault GV2000C-STD Multi Vault Standard Gun Safe $115.56
http://www.amazon.com/Gunvault-GV2000C-STD-Multi-Vault-Standard/dp/B001XZZA6A/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1281035185&sr=8-13

These lock boxes are readily available at many retailers and do secure firearms from young children. They don't offer a lot of protection from an experienced burglar, but even the most expensive gun safes can be breached by a professional.

6. What took them so long to charge him? Any time you have children and
firearms in the same household, extra precautions need to be taken to guarantee that something like this does not happen. It doesn't matter how many times you tell a child that they are not to touch a gun, there is always the chance that they won't do as you say. This kind of accident is all too common.

7. Transference
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transference
Transference is a phenomenon in psychoanalysis characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. One definition of transference is "the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person's childhood."<1> Another definition is "the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object."<2> Still another definition is "a reproduction of emotions relating to repressed experiences, esp of childhood, and the substitution of another person ... for the original object of the repressed impulses."<3> Transference was first described by Sigmund Freud, who acknowledged its importance for psychoanalysis for better understanding of the patient's feelings and feelings of rage.

Never heard of transference to an inanimate object, but you might make a good case study.

IT WAS GUN! LOCK 'EM UP!
