Neighbor praised as 'hero' for shooting alleged thief
The 39-year-old says he watched Hayes enter his neighbor's truck and that's when he called 9-1-1. He then went outside with a pistol and told Hayes to stay put until the police arrived. Hayes pulled out an object from his pockets, and that's when Gunby fired at him, according to the police report. Investigators say the shooting was self-defense.

I just do not understand some people. Why do criminals risk their lives just for somebody's stuff?

5. Yea, he needed something from that truck, late at night..
Than when confronted by a man with a gun, he pulled something from his pocket...

Sounds like he "needs" some common sense..

2. They get away with it most of the time...
The odds are in the perps favor. Every now and then though, they make a serious boo-boo. Whoops!

3. Usual comments about how good a guy the perp was
One thing to consider is at that range a gut shot is indication of lack of training or panic on the part of the shooter

4. Criminals are usually either dumb or desperate, or a combination of the two
Substance abuse often plays a role in criminal behavior.
