State senator proposes liberalizing NJ gun-carry law
OR, Are your rights for sale by the state?

A South Jersey senator has proposed a new law considerably liberalizing New Jersey's concealed-weapons-carrying laws, but the whopping fee and required proficiency demonstration will not make this new law attractive to libertarians.
It amends the current concealed-carry law (NJS 2C:58-4) to allow a person to carry a gun for reasons going far beyond the current standard. According to current law, an applicant may receive a concealed-carry permit only if he satisfies his local police chief, and then a judge, that he has a "justifiable need" to carry a handgun. Van Drew's new law, among other things, strikes that.
Van Drew's new law would require a background check, courses in gun safety and when the use of force is lawful, demonstrate proficiency in using the particular gun he proposes to carry, and pay an annual fee of $500.

Not my state, but it seems that your 2A rights are for sale.

13. Not a single person wants to tackle the real problem with the state
We have so many municipalities, more then any other state per capita. So town services from everything to town management to police and fire to town courts to school districts on and on and on are all replicated and duplicated over and over and over. But because no one wants to give up their little fifedom nobody will broach the issue of merging municipalities into larger ones. So instead New Jersey tax payers pay more and more to support the system.

6. This is a step in the right direction IMO
it is an acknowledgment that the Chicago SCOTUS decision likely deems "may issue" unconstitutional. It is an attempt to preempt a lawsuit and collect hefty fees which rule out the rifraf..you know the wrong types..

11. That's an ANNUAL fee of $500 ...

Van Drew's new law would require a background check, courses in gun safety and when the use of force is lawful, demonstrate proficiency in using the particular gun he proposes to carry, and pay an annual fee of $500. That fee alone is a show-stopper to many, especially because this is an annual fee, not the biennial $20 fee charged at present.

Holy crap!

A concealed weapons permit in Florida costs $117 and is good for 7 years. A resident of New Jersey would pay $3500 to have a permit for 7 years.

What a deal!!!

12. One of the many... Many... Many reasons I left NJ.
Taxes being number 1
Corruption being number 2
Elitism being number 3 (I was denied a permit when I applied in 2002, 2003(2x), 2004(2x) and 2005, and now I could not afford one) I moved out in 2006, and I paid a hefty tax to leave the state. Money well spent.

Glad I left... But I still take advantage of their low gas prices... I still work in NJ.

15. Yes...
If you sell your home and don't buy a new one in the state you have to pay a tax on top of any capitol gains they hit you with.
