NJ: Man shot brother, neighbor then self, authorities say with AR-15
LITTLE EGG HARBOR — Three people are dead after a double murder and apparent suicide in Little Egg Harbor's Tall Timbers development this morning.

In an afternoon press conference, authorities explained that Craig Mueller, 45, of 67 Westchester Drive, shot and killed his brother Bryan Mueller, 52, also of 67 Westchester Drive around 11 a.m. Monday. Craig Mueller also shot and killed Kara Ellis, 21, who lived two doors down from the Muellers and had rushed to Brian Mueller's aid.

Both victims were shot multiple times with an AR-15 assault rifle.

Police explained that Craig Mueller shot his brother from a second story window of the home they shared. Bryan Mueller was on the sidewalk outside the residence when he was gunned down. After the two shootings, the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

If I'm not mistaken doesn't NJ have a tough assault weapons ban? Sure worked in this case. :sarcasm:

1. LOL - and guess what, if he didn't have an AR-15 the headline would read:
Man shot brother, neighbor then self, authorities say with pistol/22 rifle/crossbow/slingshot

5. Not true...
Edited on Mon Oct-04-10 05:20 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
There are AR15 rifles that have been legally (and illegally) converted to select fire weapons. Whether legal or illegal, such an AR-15 would be classifiable as an Assault Rifle.

9. No, it wouldn't
such a weapon would no longer be identified as an AR-15.

16. As was stated below (I just have to call you on this one):
It would then be an M series rifle, not an AR....

10. A lot of us in this forum know that
but the news media, many in the public(and on DU), and some Dem politicians want to deem any scary black "military" looking rifle as an assault weapon.

And one of my points in posting the OP is that NJ has some of the toughest gun laws yet it doesn't prevent the illegal use of guns by criminals or someone with criminal intent.

IMHO many of these laws only screwover law-abiding gun owners.

29. It's All Assault Rifle, All The Time, down here...
After the "fake" mass-shooting at the University of Texas at Austin a few weeks ago, the media trenchantly insisted on using the term "AK-47 Assault Rifle" at every opportunity; there was even a follow-up story describing how the (now deceased) shooter had not converted the rifle to full-auto.

12. Strictly speaking, there is, but you have to go back to pre-1963 production
"AR-15" was the original designation of the M16 before it was formally adopted by the Air Force as such. Colt's (which had acquired the patents and trademarks from the Armalite division of Fairchild in 1959) stopped using its trademark "AR-15" for selective fire versions of the rifle, and applied it instead to semi-auto-only versions for the civilian market.

Of course, if we get really granular, it should be noted that while the patents on the AR-15/M16 design have expired, the trademark has not; "AR-15" is still a registered trademark of Colt's Manufacturing, and only models made by Colt's can legally be called "AR-15." Just like, strictly speaking, a facial tissue is only a "Kleenex" if it's been made by Kimberly-Clark.

21. According to "American Rifle" by Alex Rose, early AR-15s were full auto...
and only later were called M-16s when adoption by the military was contemplated. The AR-15 then became the designation for the semi-auto carbine.

And that rifles are the least misused of all civilian firearms?

13. More specifically, it mentions Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ
I doubt there were two incidents of a guy in his 50s running around with a semi-automatic rifle and shooting his brother, then himself, in a place that small on the same day. At least, you'd think the news media would have mentioned it if there were...

11. So now the weapon was either an AR-15 or an AK?
And by "AK" of course, we really mean "semi-automatic-only Kalashnikov variant" since, as I never tire of pointing out, "AK" stands for Автомат Калашнкова, "Kalashnikov's automatic (rifle)" and a semi-auto-only weapon is by definition not an автомат.

Thank heaven for our knowledgeable news media.

of course, I also know a lot of gun owners and regular shooters who call a magazine a "clip".

Thanks to our "knowledgeable news media".

You don't say things with an AR-15. You shoot things with an AR-15, if you are lucky or smart enough to have one.
