The Chadron City Council is considering changing a city ordinance that prohibits carrying loaded firearms in vehicles as some in the Nebraska town believe state and federal laws are already adequate when it comes to gun control.
“It looks like the state has adequately covered the whole thing, and there is no reason for us to mess with it,” council member John Gamby said recently at the second reading of an ordinance amendment to drop the prohibition of carrying a loaded rifle in plain view in a vehicle.
Gamby suggested the change after a review earlier this year of the city code book. He said the rule makes criminals of ranchers who carry a rifle in the truck as a necessary part of their work, but may forget to remove the firearm when coming to town.
While the statute has been on the books for years, it has seldom been enforced, according to city officials. Police Chief Tim Lordino said he could only recall one incident during his tenure in office. It was when a man carried a loaded handgun was walking in the downtown area and shopping.
