NYC ... Killing Prompts Push for Bodega Owners to Get Gun Permits

Published: October 28, 2010

Fernando Mateo has mostly garnered attention for two causes: ensuring the safety of livery drivers and getting illegal guns off the streets.

So it seemed a little strange to see Mr. Mateo on Thursday urging bodega owners to apply for handgun licenses to protect themselves.

“The issue is with the thugs who have illegal guns,” Mr. Mateo said after a news conference in Upper Manhattan. “If every illegal gun were taken off the street, we wouldn’t have to arm the businesses.”

***snip***

Mr. Murphy and Mr. Mateo, the leader of Hispanics Across America, a nonprofit advocacy group, said a firearm would serve as a deterrent and possibly a lifesaver for the 14,000 bodega owners in the city, whom Mr. Mateo called “sitting ducks.”

The Police Department issues gun licenses after conducting background checks on applicants. Anyone can apply; there is a $340 fee, but Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has proposed reducing the fee to ward off a possible legal challenge from gun-rights supporters.

Since Mr. Bloomberg has waged a prominent campaign against illegal guns, the move on the fee has raised eyebrows. But asked about the bodega initiative during a public appearance in Queens on Thursday, the mayor restated that his campaign had been against illegal firearms and not licensed ones.

Lifestyles of the rich and packin': High-profile celebrities seeking gun permits on the rise
Monday, September 27th 2010, 4:00 AM

Never fear J.Lo - your husband Marc Anthony is one of dozens of celebrities authorized to carry a concealed weapon in New York City.

J.Lo and her 2-year-old twins can rest easy at night: Daddy is packing heat.

Singer Marc Anthony is one of dozens of celebs, millionaires and high-profile athletes authorized to carry a concealed weapon in the city, records show.

And the number of A-listers who have guns is growing.

***snip***

While experts say the number of celebs allowed to carry guns is on the rise, the number of overall permits issued in the city this year is down from last year. There were 2,145 carry permits issued last year compared with 2,093 this year - a dip of about 2.4%.

The NYPD charges a nonrefundable $340 to file an application for a gun permit and between $94 and $106 for the collection of fingerprints, even before a background check is begun.

Gun permits aren't easy to get.

"The NYPD is extremely thorough in their investigation," said divorce lawyer to the stars Raoul Felder, who also has a permit to carry. "In other states, you fill out a form, swear you are not a lunatic, and you get it."

I wonder if Mayor Bloomberg will loosen his extremely restrictive gun laws to allow 14,000 bodega owners to have gun permits. If he does it would be a good first step away from the discriminatory and racist gun laws in the Big Apple.

2. I assume that he is talking about the NICS background check ...
when you buy the firearm. Many states such as Florida do not require a license to own a firearm as NYC does.

If he is talking about obtaining a concealed weapons permit the process is more complicated, but nowhere near as difficult or expensive as it is in NYC.

4. In some states and cities in the United States you too can be a real first class citizen...
with rights guaranteed by the Constitution and not handed out only to certain special people by pompous bureaucrats.

6. Yup, especially at WalMart
Where you can walk in and for $100 walk out with the weapon of your choice, no questions asked. Or so we were told. Remember that?

She did say, "I will go to my local Walmart and buy one myself...If I have to "waste" $100 to prove a point; so be it."

The claim was made Wed Jul-21-10 08:47 PM.

So far neither the promised report on how easy it was to buy a handgun, no questions asked, at Florida Wal-Mart nor an admission of error has been posted.

5. Not many of these "illegal guns" are actually illegal.
The term "illegal gun" is used by gun control groups to try to place the blame on the gun itself.

Most of the guns are legal, although they are in the hands of either people who are banned or are at high risk for being used in crime.

10. Bloomberg is an ego driven asshole who has no regard for law when it conflicts
with his publicity.
Also:
There was a shopkeeper nearby in Reading, Pa who shot and killed one of a team of a neighborhood gang who had come back into his shop after previously threatening and attempting to extort money from him. They have been doing this to many small shops in the area for months. No charges were filed against him, and many local shop keepers praised his actions.

Also: New York has its own set of antigun laws for decades...you have to be rich and or politically connected to own a handgun...many states do not license or even register handguns. Much of what most people "know" about guns is fiction from TV programs or thriller novels.

Also: Walmarts in my area do not sell guns of any kind except black powder muzzle loaders that do not require paperwork.
