NO GUNS: Huxley's police chief "advises" businesses to

Aaron Brilbeck - Staff Writer
8:29 a.m. CST, January 5, 2011

Police Chief Mark Pote recently sent out a letter to business owners, "advising" them to post signs forbidding weapons. Now he says he wasn't advising them to do anything, even after we read him a copy of the letter we obtained.

"You're encouraging businesses to do this," Reporter Aaron Brilbeck asked. "No not exactly," Pote replied "Only if they want to." Brilbeck then read from the letter: "We are advising any and all business owners to post a nice big unmistakable sign on the outside of the entry way that reads no weapons allowed inside. No weapons beyond this door." "If they don't want weapons allowed," Pote said. "It doesn't say that though," Brilbeck pointed out. "That was my point," Pote replied.

Doesn't seem that business owners have ever cared one way or another as to whether licensees carried in their establishments or not, at least the ones questioned. Any speculation as to Pote's motive?

Personally, this reminds me of years past when businesses were "advised" by those in power not to serve certain people.

of the approved no carry signs for a couple of years, especially by those business owners who don't understand the issue. It has eased up around here in the last couple of years, not too many signs.

The chief is apparently a power drunk twit who doesn't want to be told he 'shall' do anything which empowers the public. I knew before watching the video he was probably a young guy..he is probably 30-35? I have dealt with hundreds of police and most of the authoritarians I came across were 20-35 or so, the older cops are almost always laid back, nice people.

Also, Iowa is a very politically active state. Everyone in public office is a partisan to their party, more so than Kansas or Nebraska anyway.

Then there's this: "Mark is also employed by the Ballard Community Schools as a bus driver and shop help." So he is actually a part time police chief? That could be at issue too.
