Women buying guns in growing numbers
-----

"Crime rates go up and everybody gets a little more nervous, everybody wants to start buying firearms and ladies are no different," said Second Amendment Sports General Manager Keith Johnson.

And gun makers are taking notice, creating everything from revolvers called the "Pink Lady" and "Lavender Lady" to pink tasers, glasses and hearing protection.

The store said ladies guns are so popular, especially in pink, that they have a hard time keeping them in stock.

"It just warms my heart when I see pink," Jennifer McKenna, gun owner, said. "I say, oh it's a girl gun and it makes me giggle on the inside."

Personally I find most of the "pink" guns ugly, but there are some in colors that really look nice.

7. Hey! Women buy guns because of penis envy. Everybody knows that.
Actually, so do a lot of men.

20. Maybe. It depends on who is carrying the bigger piece.
Size matters.

8. Are you sure about that?
Cause I know as soon as I bought a Sig P228, my wife started drooling over it, and the next time we went to the range I was informed "This one's too sexy for you, it's mine." I'd have protested, but if she religiously carries it - ensuring her safety - I'm all for it.

Oh, and her preference is to use a higher capacity 18 round magazines for the P226.

You know what they say about baseless generalization, right?

9.  My Loving Wife asked me to build her an AR-15.
She helped and got a rifle that fits her and also shoots well enough that she uses it in a Reduced Course matches.

She also now claimes "my" 1954 Colt LW Commander(45cal) as HER carry piece!

21. What a jem you have...
My wife is asking for her own AR or I have to give her mine and get myself a different one.

The main reason is that she has to continually shorten the stock to fit her. She says it's a pain in the ass that every time she goes to use it, the stock is set too long for her reach. Sort of like leaving the toilet seat up(I NEVER do that) I guess?

What's really bad is that she wants to trade up her carry piece to a Kimber $$$.
And
She wants a shotgun for shooting clays... We had so much fun doing it, now she wants to make a hobby out of it.
And
She wants a MarkIII for plinking.
And
She wants her own Rem 700 to go hunting with me later this year. Freezer is getting empty.

I'm just glad she hates jewelry. But this shit is getting expensive. But, she is my Sun, Stars and Moon.

23.  Answers to your problems?
Build her an AR of her own. really quite easy, and a a lot of fun. I can say this as I was trained by the USMC as an armorer.

Get a second job. I don't know if this helps at all.

You can go on some of the auction sites and find some pretty good deals. Just don't let her try Sporting Clays!

See above. Also second job.

See above. Again the second job.

I have built 5 AR-15a2 and 3 M4gerys in the last 5 years. And no I don't build rifles for others.

http://www.gunbroker.com/

I use these sites.

Good luck with the second jobs.

34. Auction arms is a new one for me... Thanks
Our current AR, I built(to a point). I did a full assembly on the lower and bought a complete upper to go with it. It is about 95% Rock River parts.

I customized the rear aperture to give me POA / POI at any range from 25 to 600 meters(I assume). I have not been able to to shoot at more than 400 meters because of range limitations. But at 400 it is spot on so all I have to worry about is wind.

Last weekend I went to a 100yard range right near our house. Turns out they let you setup clays on the berm. Man that's fun. I'm going back this Saturday.

Could you recommend a good reloading kit to get started with? I just spent enough cash on ammo for going to the range this weekend to probably buy a nice reloading setup.

P.S. I'm sure you could do better...

24. My wife shot my new Kimber Pro Eclipse
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 03:39 PM by pipoman
the first day I owned it, then proclaimed it hers. It happened we were at a range which was a Kimber dealer. I exited the range and bought an Ultra CDP for myself...she has carried that heavy .45 since..(edit) and can drive nails with it at 25 yards..

Okay, my daughter likes her pink rifle.

But my wife complains the .380 is too wimpy, wants at least a .45 auto.

11. I remember a lady who used to show up at the pistol range occasionally ...
with a Les Bauer .45 auto, a beautiful but somewhat expensive 1911 style .45 acp.

She was a lady of mystery as she was polite but never said much to anyone. She would just go out on the range and blow the center out of her target.

Her shooting ability was very impressive.

12. Currently .44 special is her favorite
Big bang in a small gun, flame shooting out everywhere, massive recoil, oh-yeah!

I'd be sleeping on the couch if I offered her some wimpy pink gun.

Me, I kind of like our .22 revolver.

17. I can only surmise...
...but I think the popularity of pink firearms is because there's no risk of a male spouse or sibling appropriating a pink gun.

15. 60% of my kids school rifle team are young ladies.
Two years ago the team almost became extinct because of lack of interest. New coach, new attitude. Now the team has near 24 kids to draw from for matches.

The coach is a petite lady and can shoot her Kimber or S&M much better than many men. My daughter ranks 4th on the team. Not bad for a NY state school.

Talk about girl power.

32. Is it me, or does this story get wheeled out every few months or so
Because I'm fairly certain we've been seeing stories like this crop up with some regularity in the two years I've been on this board, and I get the impression it's a story news editors keep in reserve for slow weeks.

You are probably right. On the other hand, maybe each story represents an increase over the previous story of the number of females getting guns.

Now I've been teaching her how to shoot and getting her signed up for her CHL. More women buying guns is a great thing!

39. Excellent choice. If she is learning to shoot get a laser sight for practice.
I used an S&W 642 for my wife's first gun. But to improve her practice and save cost I got her a Crimson Trace laser. I had her practice dry firing, using Snap Caps (dummy ammo so the dry firing doesn't damage the gun) until she could pull the trigger without the laser dot on the wall jerking when she pulled the trigger.

I also got her a .22 to practice with as the ammo is so much cheaper.

I know it sounds like a lot of money but the result is much faster training and cheaper training. The laser dot gives IMMEDIATE reinforcement when she does it right. Also, once she starts to carry the laser can be a life saver if she has to actually use the gun. It is a huge aid in putting bullets on target, although you can't use it for the proficiency test.
