would hardly have qualified as a "nut." In fact, he was a columnist for the Washington Post and his column was syndicated to newspapers all over the country. He was very much anti-gun and frequently made his opinions known in his column.

"Anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail- period!"

In 1985, he called for "A complete and universal federal ban on the sale, manufacture, importation and possession of handguns."

On June 14, 1988, he was arrested for shooting, with an illegally possessed and unregistered handgun, a kid skinny dipping in his Washington DC swimming pool. Carl Rowan howled long and hard. Throughout his arrest and trial on assault and weapons charges, he vehemently and adamantly insisted he was a victim of racial discrimination, persecuted for "defending himself," because he was a black man who had shot a white intruder. He also said the pistol he used was exempt from the District's strict gun-control laws because it belonged to his older son, a former FBI agent. District officials disagreed and charged the columnist with violating those laws. During the trial, he argued that he "...had the right to use whatever means necessary to protect himself and his family."

You do have to wonder what a naked kid could have been reaching for that put him in "fear for his life", a wet towel? He may not have been a "nut" but he was a grade A hypocrite. His hatred for the "gun lobby" was at least equal to yours.

20. I don't believe that even those posters who favor draconian gun laws

would agree with this individual's viewpoint that a person who just happened to be carrying a firearm openly in a holster is threatening enough to justify running over with a car.

This person has no concept of either the Second Amendment or justifiable self defense. I have no idea if he has a mental issue or not but anyone who would post such a video had better hope that he never kills a person legally carrying a firearm. The prosecution would show the video and the jury would rule that he was guilty of murder unless he had numerous witnesses that said that he had a valid reason to act in self defense.

I realize that while most people who dislike firearms are not as extreme as this man, they often do suffer from an irrational fear of those who do carry legally. Statistics have proven the licensed gun owners are the cream of honest society and it's extremely rare when one abuses his right to carry a weapon. Still many people do believe that the NRA and those who own firearms are responsible for gun crime in our nation.

I do agree that gun owners should secure their weapons and make it difficult for criminals to steal them. A gun safe that is difficult for a amateur criminal to break into is not extremely expensive. A locksmith once told me that a true professional can defeat any gun safe given time.

In my opinion, it would be wiser for those who oppose firearms to look to improve our laws so that criminals and the people who suffer from severe mental problems have a hard time obtaining a firearm. Realistically, no matter how good the laws are and no matter how effective our police are at enforcing them, criminals will always be able to obtain firearms. I can walk two blocks from my house and buy illegal drugs despite all the efforts of law enforcement to win the War on Drugs. Even if all firearms were banned and confiscated, guns would be smuggled into our nation and be readily available. In fact, if the government declared a war on ALL firearms, the guns that criminals could buy would include fully automatic AK-47s rather then semi-auto clones. Such weapons are cheap and readily available all over the world. I hear that they sell for as low as $50 on the world market but are available in Mexico for an inflated price of less than $400. Such a registered fully automatic AK-47 would cost 10 to 20 thousand dollars in the U.S.

Probably the reason we do not see a market for fully automatic weapons in our country is that such weapons are more useful as military weapons than the weapons criminals prefer to for their profession. Most gun owners see little use for a fully automatic weapon for target shooting or self defense. The few that do and can have the money to buy the very expensive fully automatic firearms that are legal to purchase in the U.S. I knew a gun store owner who legally owned a Thompson submachine gun and reloaded his own ammo. He said he rarely took it to the range because it was just too damned expensive to shoot. When he did, he said it was great fun.



Several years ago I went to a police range and fired a fully automatic Uzi that a police officer owned. It's amazing how fast you can go through a several boxes of ammo. It was fun but I have absolutely no desire or reason to own one.

For civilian possession, all machineguns must have been manufactured and registered with the ATF prior to May 19, 1986 to be transferable between citizens. These machinegun prices have drastically escalated in value, especially items like registered sears and conversion-kits. Only a Class-II manufacturer (a FFL holder licensed to manufacture firearms or Type-07 license that has paid a Special Occupational Tax Stamp or SOT) could manufacture machineguns after that date, and they can only be sold to Government, law-enforcement, and military entities. Transfer can only be done to other SOT FFL-holders, and such FFL-holders must have a “demonstration letter” from a respective Government agency to receive such machineguns. Falsification and/or misuse of the “demo-letter” process can and has resulted in long jail sentences and felony convictions for violators.

The only slight difference is that this guy advocates direct, personal "action" ... by running over anyone he thinks is carrying.

Many of our pro gun control brethren here want someone else to do the dirty work, like have a cop arrest anyone they see or think is carrying and therefore threatening them.

But IIRC, we did have someone a while back that advocated confronting and screaming at anyone they saw open carrying to "embarrass and harass them". I always thought screaming in the face of an armed person might not be the wisest strategy, but some people are incredibly brave .... online.
