Rockets still batter the quest for lasting peace
Rockets still batter the quest for lasting peace
March 29, 2006

Members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed group within President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah, put on a show of rockets, mortars and grenades in the Gaza Strip yesterday and vowed to intensify attacks on Israel.

They said they had developed rockets that could hit the nearby city of Ashkelon and planned to launch them in an operation dubbed "Volcano of Fire".

Meanwhile, a Hamas-dominated Palestinian parliament approved the Islamic militant group's cabinet and programme yesterday, clearing the way for it to take control of the government two months after its shock election victory.

Just before the assembly voted 71 to 36 in favour of the new government, Hamas's prime minister-designate, Ismail Haniyeh, vowed not to give up the fight against Israel.

1. And this is how you get unilateral action from Israel.

2. This feud is 50+ years, nothing is unilateral.
Just thought I should say it out loud.

3. Unilateral as opposed to negotiated.
Is what I meant.

The deal with Egypt was negotiated - its looking like that won't happen with the Palestinians.

4. Countries like to negotiate with countries.
I wouldn't be able to name to you a single country that negotiates with ethnic minorities as equal partners.

5. Sorry I missed this reply - I agree with you
Countries don't negotiate as equals with ethnic groups. But israel has negotiated with the Palestinians during those periods when Palestinian leadership officially opposed terrorism... and Hamas won't renounce terrorism.

7. I think it's a little more complex than that
It is possible to both condemn the occupation and understand that it didn't arise in a vacume.
