Next British PM to change Mideast approach
British 'Independent' reports Blair’s replacement to reveal 100-day plan to jump-start radical change of approach on Middle East

"Britain’s next prime minister is consolidating a strategy for his first 100 days in office that will herald a radical change of approach on the Middle East, according to a report published Tuesday in The Independent.

According to the report, Gordon Brown, who is expected to replace British Prime Minister Tony Blair, welcomes the projected resignation of Lord Levy, Blair’s personal envoy to the Middle East.

"Levy will go," a senior figure said Monday.

Nevertheless, Brown privately reassured Labor Friends of Israel that he would not compromise on Blair's support for the right of Israel to exist as a separate state."

"According to the report, Brown’s associates believe the changes to Middle East policy will be welcomed by Labor voters, who deserted in droves at last week's local elections."

4. Almost certainly not, sadly.
I think the chance of Brown beating Cameron is very slim indeed, sadly. However, he'll be Prime Minister for a couple of years before then.

3.  Levy to quit as Middle East envoy
By Colin Brown
Published: 08 May 2007

Lord Levy, the Labour fundraiser, is poised to quit as the Prime Minister's personal envoy to the Middle East when Tony Blair leaves office.

He will follow John Reid, Home Secretary, by announcing he will go when Mr Blair steps down in June. But it emerged yesterday that he would be axed if he did not resign when Gordon Brown took over.

"Levy will go," a senior figure said yesterday. "It's vital because he is seen as somebody who thinks it's Israel, right or wrong." Lord Levy was ennobled after Mr Blairs election victory in 1997 and later appointed as the Prime Minister's Middle East. He has kept actively engaged in behind-the-scenes visits to the Middle East on Mr Blair's behalf in spite of being arrested in the "cash-for-honours" inquiry.

Lord Levy, 61, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, and a 216-page dossier was handed by police to the Crown Prosecution Service on 20 April. He denies any wrongdoing.
