Original Palestinian scarf faces final wrap-up
LIKE many Palestinians of his generation, 76-year-old Yasser Hirbawi felt a newfound pride when a young Yasser Arafat began to campaign for an independent homeland half a century ago. He also sensed a business opportunity.

As Arafat shot into the international spotlight as the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr Hirbawi realised there was money to be made by manufacturing the keffiyeh, the black-and-white headdress that became Arafat's trademark.

The keffiyeh may remain a symbol of Palestinian solidarity and has become a fashion accessory from New York to Tokyo, but its sole surviving Palestinian manufacturer is in danger of closing.

"It's the national symbol. It must keep going and it must be produced locally," Mr Hirbawi said. "It must be protected."

1. A fashion accessory from New York to Tokyo?
I was not aware that this was the case. Has anyone observed this phenomenon?

2. yes, I wear one from time to time
and I see others wearing them as well, and its not because we are showing solidarity with our Palestinian brothers.

3. What kind of statement are you intending to make by wearing one?
Or is there no associated statement?

4. It was a lot more common in the late 80's... Many young people wore them as winter wear.

Myself included. I still wear mine! And when I do it's for warmth AND solidarity!
