US Suggests Ending Public Debate on Israel-Palestine at UN
US Suggests Ending Public Debate on Israel-Palestine at UN

Meanwhile, at the UN, the Bush administration is suggesting the Security Council and other bodies end public debate on the Israel-Palestine conflict. On Tuesday, US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad told the Security Council that discussion has become futile.

US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad: “If these types of meetings do not contribute to that effort, or worse, if they fuel the tensions that impede constructive engagement, then we need to ask ourselves whether the public format of debates in New York truly help create the environment necessary to facilitate the pursuit of the two-state solution.”

The UN General Assembly annually passes resolutions calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

6. The more the debate is silenced
The less chance there is that Israel will have to end it's criminal occupation, it's violent colonialist expansion, and then who will the US be able to deal it's high tech weapons to? Those apache helicopters need to shoot somebody out there or a lot of folks are going out of business!

2. OF COURSE the bush** admin wants to squelch all oversite and
discussion. They don't want to hear the bitching when we bomb Iran like Israel wants us to do.

3. So you're trying to say..
that if Bush bombs Iran it's because 'Israel wants him to'?????

Don't you think that Bush bombs places because HE wants to? He may use other countries in the process (don't we know in Britain!) but he is not going to be swayed by a tiny country with a weak government like Israel.

to follow in this administrations footsteps. And he was just traisping all over Israel making them feel hopeful that they'll get their way if he's elected.

AIPAC and Israel have been the two biggest promoters of bombing Iran. And Ohlmert said a few days ago that he believes that there is a 'slight' chance that we (of course the US) would be bombing Iran since CHENEY was in Israel.

I read that article about Ohlmert HERE on DU. I'll try to find it.

edit: to clarify some shit I said

9. I have no doubt that your first sentence (about McNuts) is true...

For the rest:

'just traipsing over Israel making them feel hopeful that they'll get their way if he's elected'

Or rather perhaps:

'just traipsing over Israel trying to get their support and maximize the chances that they'll fall in with what HE wants if he's elected'?

He's been traipsing over England as well, trying to worm his way in with both Brown and Cameron; and you can also bet that WE'RE seen as the junior partner, and that he hopes that the British PM will be his poodle -not the other way round. Ditto, I'm sure, with Israel.

Israel doesn't control America, any more than Britain does. Or do you think we do too?

11. Bullshit.
AIPAC and Israel have been the two biggest promoters of bombing Iran? Show me when AIPAC has promoted bombing Iran.

4. Not quite clear what he's saying...
is it that they should stop debating the issue at all, or that they should censor public info about it?

5. Is Khalidilzad saying that the UN should
stop making public resolutions about Israel? So is that keep it to themselves or just plain STFU about Israel altogether.

7. This of course undermines what the U.N. is all about
Which is just what American wingnuts want...

My view is, rather than silence debate, we should work towards improving the U.N. as an institution and help it reach the goals it professes to strive for.

But we just can't have that, can we. No. We've got to have things our way, and if others don't like it, well screw them we will do what we want anyway because we're the biggest super power and we're so glorious that we don't have to play by the rules.

12. If you believe in the UN...
...perhaps you should request they stop their anti-Israeli agenda and bigotry. As for "open discussions," what the hell has been solved or even been progressed? If you are really interested in the I/P situation being resolved, then you should not approve of bigotry against either party leveled by a world body.
