The talkbacker as terrorist

Anyone who's scrolled to the bottom of a Ha'aretz article and gotten a look at the talkback section will like this article, though it's not confined to Ha'aretz and shows up here at DU at times.

In an earlier age, we might well have concerned ourselves with the Taxonomy of the Talkbacker, probing, collecting, and classifying the sorts of people who appear to live a good portion of their lives at the bottom of the page.

As in any biological example of rapid, globe-circling growth in a habitat of markedly favorable conditions and few predators, the genus Backtalkus has spawned countless distinct and flamboyantly diverse species.

These are the readers who would like nothing better than to terrorize the talkback landscape into a verbal version of Grand Theft Auto video games. These are the readers whose purpose, first and foremost, is to dehumanize. They are counter-compassionate, denying all humanity for those they feel that it is their life's duty to, literally, write off.

2. Tragicomic article

The anonymity of 'talkback', like the Internet, gives a chance for all sorts of haters on all sides to come out from under their rocks - and not only on I/P issues. What is really sad is that there *are* a significant number of people who think that way.

4. The talkback for the article was pretty amusing...

The folk he was talking about at came rushing out of the woodwork to inform him how wrong and what a whiner he was. Thankfully there's less of those types over here at DU than over there. I stopped reading Ha'aretz talkbacks after I went through a thread where the exterminate! exterminate! types were holding court...
