Settlers rampage through West Bank villages; Mosques vandalized

Date: 02 / 12 / 2008 Time: 10:57

Masked Israeli settlers
Nablus – Ma’an – Israeli settlers rampaged through five villages in the northern West Bank early on Tuesday, vandalizing mosques, attacking farms and harassing residents.

In the villages of Yatma, Qabalan and As-Sawiya, south of Nablus, settlers slashed the tires of more than 20 cars and also set fire to thousands of shekels’ worth of straw bales, used as animal feed.

In As-Sawiya, settlers wrote slogans insulting Islam and the prophet Mohammad on the walls of a local mosque.

Hikmat Abu Ras, a resident of As-Sawiya who works for the Palestinian Ministry of Planning, said that when residents awoke they witnessed the settlers already fleeing the village. He said settlers painted a star of David and slogans such as “Death to Arabs” on the village mosque.

He said that residents of the village, particularly students, were harassed by settlers while they waited for transportation in the morning on the road between Nablus and Ramallah.

As-Sawiya is ringed by three settlements: Rechelim, Eli and Shilo.

3. I must ask what your comment referred to
the actions of the settlers or the fact it was reported, I would hope the former.

2. And IDF or the Israeli border police are doing what?
besides protecting them for any Palestinian who has the "gall" to try to stand up to them.
I found the masked part interesting I wondered if unmasked would members of the police or even IDF be found amongst them? AS to masks the more I read the more white sheets seem fitting.

4. Evidently IDF was "otherwise" occupied
IDF troops shoot and kill wanted Palestinian during raid in Nablus

Israel Defense Forces soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian militant during a raid in the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday, the IDF said.

The militant was identified as Mohammed Abu Daragh.

He was 27 years old and a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent group that has largely halted its activities. Most Al Aqsa members have received amnesty from Israel.

5. Israeli forces kill pardoned Palestinian fighter in Nablus
<snip>

"Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man formerly affiliated to the armed wing of Fatah, the Al-Aqsa Brigades, in Balata Refugee Camp in the West Bank city of Nablus at Midnight on Monday.

The man was identified as 27-year-old Mohammad Abu Thraa, a fighter who had been pardoned by Israel as a part of an amnesty agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Nablus Governor Jamal Muheisin accused Israel of deliberately assassinating Abu Thraa.

The Muheisin confirmed that Abu Thraa had, as a part of his amnesty deal, spent time in the PA’s Al-Juneid prison. After receiving a formal pardon, he would spend his days in his house, and then would be transported to the prison by a Palestinian Preventive Security bus.

The governor added that there is "no justification" for killing a man already pardoned by Israel. He called the operation "cowardly."

6. I had wondered about the amnesty
is there an "Apocalypse Now" situation in Israel with a disconnect between IDF and the government? Is IDF a "power on to it self" with no governmental oversight? It seems so, also from reading the article this man was not killed but indeed executed.

And as for IDF while settlers rampaged in the West Bank IDF was truely busy doing other things

Meanwhile, Israeli forces seized nine other Palestinians during overnight raids across the West Bank. Sources in the Israeli army reported that they arrested residents of the cities of Jenin, Ramallah and Bethlehem.

I have to wonder if there is not some passing of info between IDF and the settlers or is "just coincidence"?

9. IDF: Hebron violence shames us as Jews
Senior military officer launches harshly-worded assault on behavior of right-wing extremists in case of disputed West Bank house slated for eviction. Meanwhile army decides to deploy special Border Guard force to isolate, secure area

<snip>

"The events in Hebron are riots, plain and simple. The damage caused to the Muslim graveyard, and the graffiti on the walls of mosques throughout Judea and Samaria – they shame and disgrace us as Jews," a senior IDF officer belonging to the army's Central Command told Ynet on Tuesday evening following a particularly violent day in Hebron.

Dozens of right-wing activists and Palestinians were wounded in the clashes, and it was decided that a special Border Guard force will be deployed to secure area of the disputed house in the city slated for eviction.

"I don't understand how the preparatory schools and yeshivas are willing to allow these boys to run about and riot without restraint," the officer said.

"Just today a 15-year-old youth was seriously wounded in Hebron; it's unclear why he there and not in school like the rest of the boys his age.

The Hadassah Ein-Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem said that the boy is undergoing surgery, and is in serious but stable condition."

10. A pogrom by any other name
and another example of an oppressed people becoming the oppressors. This makes a fine recruiting poster for the next suicide bomber.

It is the question of the relation of religion to the state, of the contradiction between religious constraint and political emancipation. Emancipation from religion is laid down as a condition, both to the Jew who wants to be emancipated politically, and to the state which is to effect emancipation and is itself to be emancipated.

13. Senior security official: Youths in Hebron motivated by hatred
Violent Jewish youths in Hebron are motivated by hatred for State, senior security official tells Ynet Wednesday night; rightist hardliner Daniela Weiss likely to be arrested soon, he says

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3633077,00.html

<snip>

"Violent Jewish youths in Hebron are motivated by "hatred for the State and hatred for police," a senior security official told Ynet Wednesday night, addressing the tense atmosphere and ongoing violence in the West Bank city.

"There are people in the security establishment who are trying to control the flames, yet the problem is that the leadership in Judea and Samaria was influential as long as we were dealing with people who live in the area," the source said.

"This time we are dealing with youngsters who arrived from all across the nation. We are not necessarily seeing youths motivated by Greater Israel ideology. Some of them are dubious characters, including criminals, and nobody can control them. They are like gangs, lacking any sense of responsibility or judgment."

14. Blame their rabbis for spreading hatred and intolerance
Who would have thought that Israel would follow the path of Saudi Arabia in raising generations of jihadists.
