Israeli invention may revolutionize skin cancer diagnosis
An Israeli company has developed what it believes is a breakthrough device to aid in the early detection of skin cancer.

The device, developed by Skin Cancer Scanning, is currently undergoing clinical trials at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. It offers far more precise data than the doctor's naked eye, by using fiber-optic cables to scan for potentially malignant moles.

It was found to be 92 percent effective in identifying certain types of skin cancer - far more so than any apparatus currently available.

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and its incidence rate grows annually.

The disease is currently identified through a two-stage diagnosis - first, suspicious moles are examined by a physician. If the physician believes the patient is at risk, the patient undergoes a biopsy.

1. Excellent news - very interesting!
Perhaps you might also want to post it in the Health Forum (but avoid the vaccine threads - they'd make the worst debates in I/P look like sweet songs of love and peace!)

3. That would depend on whether you want to boycott it
since it's Israeli and all...

7. Since you are in favor of boycotts
I hope you don't need skin cancer treatment, or use of any other Israeli medical advance.

Or are you just boycotting ideas and food, not technology and medical advances?

8. Hey, I boycott when I do my shopping! Plus my dad is prone to skin cancer!
And guess what? When it comes to treatment of skin cancer, we here in Australia are shitting all over the rest when it comes to advances in treatment.

Skin cancer vaccine trials to begin

The best way to deal with the problem of skin cancer is to stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen and hats if you are out in it. Oh, and stay out of solariums totally...

9. I think you're missing the point of a boycott.

The goal of boycotting Israeli products is not - as I'm sure you'd like to believe (and, to be fair, as may be a partial motivation for a minority of those involved) - a barren sense of moral/ideological superiority.

It's to try to influence Israel's actions, and thus improve the lot of the Palestinians.

That means that

a) A boycott doesn't have to be absolute to do good - buying non-Israeli produce when there's an easy alternative, but not sweating it too much (as I do, when I remember, although with Passover coming up there may be some things I find hard to do that with...), does a little good, albeit not much (assuming you regard putting pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians as a good thing, which I do).

and

b) Boycotting medical advances wouldn't really help much, unless the Israeli manufacturer was making a profit from each case of skin cancer cured, which I think is not usually how these things work.

10. It was diagnostic, not treatment
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 09:56 AM by azurnoir
but geez I guess without Israel the world would still be in the stone age right? But then again as we all found out from an oh so informative video posted here you can't boycott Israel if you watch Star Trek.

17. I think that in todays economy
in the US most insurance companies will make it one of those diagnostics that you are "allowed" to pay out of pocket for if you wish to have it done, the only exception will be those who have been diagnosed once already

16. Your parents probably boycotted Aspirin and Volkswagen cars, right?
-because they were German products (and in particular because Bayer and Volswagen had connections with the Nazis).

That doesn't mean that they would have refused to listen to Beethoven, or not have x-rays taken (which were invented by Germans). What your parents participated in was what was called a direct financial boycott. Its pretty simple, if the products originated from Germany, your parents probably refused to buy them.

The argument that you can't boycott Israel and still use computers, mobile phones, etc is fairly silly. For one thing, the people who try and make that argument vastly exaggerate Israel's technical accomplishments. The computer I just happen to be using an AMD CPU, (AMD does not have research or production in Israel). Even as far as Intel chips go, there are plenty of Intel chips on the market that were made without Israeli involvement, and Israel is a pretty small section of Intel's global empire.

The more important issue is that the point of a boycott is not to demonstrate your ability to absterge yourself from the produce of another country, but to place financial pressure and moral suasion upon that country by reducing their exports.

For my part, I think a concerted boycott by the European countries against Israeli products would be highly effective. The current dispute in the UK regarding the labelling of Israeli produce (Israel tries to avoid boycotts by shipping produce through Cyprus and labelling it as Cypriot) is one example of how sensitive Israel is towards boycotts.

4. quite a few posts about discreet issues either in the WB and Gazo
or Israel, that are not connected to I/P issues, or only tangentially connected, are posted here. What is it in this one that you find so objectionable?

11. I suspect it of being inspired by this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcHwyW9xOyI was linked to in a recent thread, and "objectionable" does not seem to be an unreasonable term to describe it; I suspect this OP is a follow up to that.

12. Well, you'd be wrong.
I was reading Ha'aretz this morning and saw the story. But, the responses here and in LBN (I posted it there too as well as the health forum) certainly do say more than the words on the "page."

description for the video, the conflation levels Israel/Jew were off the meters, as to this thread even if the boycott was not the op's reason for posting it would only be moments before that was brought into the discussion
