Alabama - voter registration backlog, key resignation
Alabama voter registration beset by backlog, key resignation
JAY REEVES, Associated Press Writer

(10-20) 20:43 PDT BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) --

Counties across Alabama struggled to deal with a backlog of thousands of last-minute voter registrations as the state's longtime head of voter registration quit Wednesday less than two weeks before Election Day.

Secretary of State Nancy Worley's office also was attempting to sort out a record-keeping discrepancy that left uncertain the actual number of registered voters in the state -- thought to be around 2.54 million.

With some 37,000 newly registered voters statewide in September and as many as 110,000 additional voters this year, county registration offices have been inundated with registration forms that need to be processed before the election. Friday is the deadline to register.

As counties dealt with the surge of new voter forms, Anita Tatum, director of the State Office of Voter Registration, said she resigned under pressure Tuesday evening. She referred questions to officials at the Alabama State Employees Association.

Well, this looks more like incompetence than dirty tricks to me, but the end result will probably be the same.

1. Aaarrgh - Everytime I hear one of these stories
about voter registration problems and voting problems I just have to scream.

What is wrong with this country. Why are we having so much trouble with registering and voting? And we are trying to spread democracy in other countries so they can vote.

2. You misunderstand.
We want Democracy in other countries so we can rig their elections and put whom we want in power. It's easier than a coup and the Re-cons have lots of experience at it.

5. We should vote electronically using our social security numbers,
and we should have access to the results of our votes so we know we aren't being screwed. One person. One vote. No hanky panky.

6. No, because that would make sense.
What are you thinking?! ;) We must re-invent the wheel entirely for each election. :eyes:

7. I don't know. I guess my brain was engaged there for a second.
Let me watch a few minutes of Faux 'news.' That ought to switch off all those nasty little neuro receptors.
