17. Let me take a stab at explaining this - Devil's Advocate Style

I know conservatives very well, though I do not consider myself one.

Speaking from the conservative perspective, which is the majority perspective in the US, I would have a real problem with Kerry. It's not like he purports to be a middle-of-the-road kind of guy. Rather, he comes across as a very real liberal. Bush*'s charge that Kerry is a liberal works, because it's true. I know he has moderated some of his rhetoric, but even his prinsipal ideals are liberal: gay tolerance, raise taxes on anyone, pro-choice, anti-death penalty, socialized medicine, etc.

So, let's say, as a conservative, I really don't like what Bush* is doing. If that's the case, I might consider tossing my vote to a moderate, or at least someone who comes across as a moderate.

BUT, not to a liberal.

I suggest Bush*'s approval numbers are truly list low.
I also suggest that a number of people who disapprove of Bush* will never vote for Kerry. The will hold their noses and vote for Bush*.

It's also been suggested that a number of people who disapprove of Bush* will hold their noses and vote for Kerry.

In any case, it seems a LOT of people will be holding their noses this Tuesday.

I fancy a whif of that air. A deep breath even. I'm betting it will remind me a lot of what change smells like.
