A Dean/Buchanan discussion at Michigan State March 3 and 4.
The last debate they had at the University of PA Annenberg Center was a huge hit. Here are some pics from that.
http://www.asc.upenn.edu/scrapbook/2004/2004-10-19-dean-buchannan/

This one covers two nights apparently, appears to be open to the public.

Two fund-raising events for the program are planned and expected to draw the largest multi-partisan crowds of any event in the state. Political commentators and former presidential candidates Patrick Buchanan and Howard Dean will be the featured speakers on March 3 and 4, as follows:

MPLP 10th Annual Fundraising Dinner, Thursday, March 3, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., at the Laurel Manor in Livonia
MPLP 3rd Annual West Michigan Breakfast, Friday, March 4, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., at the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids

The duo will provide commentary on current state and national political issues, covering both sides of the political aisle. Buchanan is an author, columnist, political analyst and regular contributor for MSNBC. A senior adviser to three presidents, Buchanan is also a three-time candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, and was the 2000 Reform Party presidential nominee.

A medical doctor, Dean began his political career in the Vermont House of Representatives. In 2002, he stepped down from his decade-long term as Vermont governor to run for U.S. president. Most recently, he announced a bid to chair the Democratic National Committee."

1. In Kansas for fundraisers next week....MS on the 1st.
Large number in MS for the dinner and other events. I believe over 1000 for the dinner. That is great in MS.

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean is heading to Topeka later this month to address a conference of student leaders from universities in the Midwest.

Dean sought the Democratic presidential nomination last year, using the Internet to reach college students and other young voters. He's currently seeking the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee.

Dean will give the keynote speech February 24 at the Washburn University Student Association Conference. The annual event draws about 200 student leaders from Kansas and other states in the Midwest."

He has also added Lawrence, Kansas for a rally, looks like the 25th.

Democratic Chairman Adds Lawrence to Agenda
AP
Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean has added a stop in Lawrence to the schedule for his Kansas trip next week.

The state Democratic Party says Dean will take part in a late-afternoon rally next Friday at Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence. Tickets are five dollars.

Dean is scheduled to speak the previous night to a conference at Washburn University in Topeka. About 200 student leaders from throughout the Midwest are expected at Washburn's annual Student
Association Conference.

The former Vermont governor was elected earlier this month as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Dean has pledged to strengthen state and local party organizations throughout the country."

4. He's coming to Jackson, MS on March 1st!
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 02:37 AM by Melodybe
I can't wait to meet him!

The picture is a hoot, Dean looks digusted with Buchanan.

Part of me likes Pat Buchanan, his command of the language and his ability to twist logic just so, is interesting to watch.

If only he would quite whoring for Bushco.

2. Interesting match up
On the one hand, they share something in common--both oppose Bush on the war.

On the other hand, they are at opposite ends on another area--the culture wars. While I don't agree with much of what Buchanan says (other than opposing the Iraq war), I did find it interesting even prior to the election when Buchanan spoke of the culture wars. While the moral values vote was over emphasized for a point after the electon, it was still a factor, and Buchanan was talking about it before everyone else did.

Buchanan, of course, is on the conservative end, alligning with the religious right. Dean has taken heat for being considered secular (which should not be a bad thing, but here in Bush World it is considered to be bad.)

A Buchanan-Dean debate presumably would get away from Iraq, the issue Dean is perhaps most identified with, but should be interesting on the culture wars front.

3. I remember some of the comments about their discussion...
The students were amazed at how much they agreed on, and once Dean laughed and said "I think I have just been passed on my left."

The students were amazed. I do find myself sickened by Buchanan's views of other peoples though.

The student loved the discussion of issues, and were so happy that no one was yelling out stupid remarks.

5. The thing that strikes me about both of them
is that they have both taken big political risks to stand on principle. I may not agree with Buchanan's principles (except on war, and to an extent trade), but I definitely think he has a backbone every bit as strong as Dean's.

8. Alfred University Feb. 22...

SNIP.."Dean to speak at Alfred
By The Leader staff

ALFRED | Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, will speak as part of a new speaker series at Alfred University.

Dean will discuss youth involvement in the political process during a session scheduled for 8 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Holmes Auditorium. Dean is currently working to be named national Dem-ocratic Party chairman.

Student organizers said the new series will bring at least one significant speaker to the campus each year.

Maurice Myrie, student coordinator of the Student Activities Board Speaker Series, expects Dean to be a big draw. Myrie said Dean should draw as many as U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who spoke at Alfred University in 2000, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who spoke at the college in 1998.

"Look at what Dean's achieved. He's a doctor, a former governor and a former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination," Myrie said.

Dan Napolitano, Alfred University's director of student activities, praised student organizers, including Myrie, for booking Dean.

"I think the Student Activities Board did an outstanding job getting someone we feel will appeal to students," Napolitano said. "Dean is someone who is very relevant on a national scale. Maurice (Myrie) deserves all the credit in the world for getting him here."

Admission to Dean's presentation is free. Tickets will be made available beginning Feb. 1, with seating priority given to Alfred University students..."

11. Not sure.
A lot of these were set up before, and he will be heading South more soon. I have noticed he is keeping the ones already scheduled, and adding the Southern and mid west ones along.

I just saw that his rally in Kansas for next Friday sold out in two hours today. They will have to use outside speakers.

I think he is sort of redefining the role, which may be a good thing. Notice he is staying off mainstream TV right now, which I think is good. The way many of the shows are now, it would counter-productive.

I have a feeling he will do more TV later on, when all the lectures from the GOP stop about bad the Democrats were to elect him.

I think the Dubai one may be a yearly thing now.

13. I notice he goes to a lot of college campuses.
I know this is deliberate. Working to get the youth out. He has been well-received even at conservative colleges. He was liked at Loyola, but then because of his stance on womens' right they banned him and the ACLU from campus again.

It is good technique to debate openly and fairly. It was hard to watch Perle, but that debate allowed people to see a moderate Democratic voice.
