Jack Webb walked around "overplaying" the character of "Joe Friday" as a parody of himself: he was "Joe Friday." p.s. and what people said earlier in this thread, about him being a caricature. Before he ran for governor, he said that he was "a media creation". I think it's one of the few truths he's ever uttered -- and it was a pretty devastating prediction. His manufactured persona has taken on a life of its own. In a way this is more dangerous than an actor getting carried away and believing he really is Napoleon, or Superman, or a serial killer -- actors have an extensive training period so they're used to leaving the character behind after the play/movie is completed. Bush is so suggestible that he believes his own propaganda (e.g. about being "selected by God").
