WASHINGTON Ñ With a showdown vote as early as today,
President Bush appears closer than ever to achieving a
goal at the core of his efforts to increase the nation's
energy production: opening an Alaskan wildlife refuge to
drilling for oil and natural gas.

.........

Ads opposing the drilling also have run in the home states
of Democratic Sens. Daniel K. Akaka of Hawaii and Mary L.
Landrieu of Louisiana, both of whom supported Arctic
drilling in 2003. Spokesmen for Landrieu and Akaka said
their positions remained unchanged.

2. I called Landrieu's office
and I told her that I didn't want her supporting drilling in ANWR. The woman who answered the phone told me she hasn't released a position on ANWR. I told her I did not want her to support drilling and that I was very disappointed in her vote on the bankruptcy bill and that she wasn't standing up for democratic values and that I saw no reason to vote for her again.

"Ok, thank you for your call."

They are always very nice and polite when you call, but they always want to get you off of the phone. I think a long letter is in order.

4. That woman is lying or ignorant. When I called, it was a totally
different story. Plus, the article that I posted specifically notes that her spokeman said that she was planning on voting for drilling.

14. Thx-- let's make them know there'll be hell to pay if they betray the ANWR
Both Landrieu and Akaka probably think they can slip a capitulation vote on the ANWR under the radar screen. We need to make absolutely clear to them, that there will be serious political consequences for this, and that Dem voters in their states will just stay home on Election Day rather than support traitors to the wildlife on the ANWR, who lack a voice of their own. Thanks again for bringing attention to this.
