League opposes Bush Social Security plan
The League of Women Voters of the United States and the LWV of the Claremont Area are urging our U.S. senators and representatives to oppose current proposals to privatize Social Security.
The Social Security system is not in crisis and any changes should make this safety net for older Americans more solvent and dependable.
The long-term challenges to this system do not manifest themselves until the year 2041. Diverting money from the Social Security trust fund into private accounts could hasten the insolvency of the fund.
There are reasonable, moderate adjustments that can achieve solvency and fiscal soundness, and there is time to do just that.
Social Security is one of the most successful social welfare programs of the 20th century. It has been the primary safety net for older workers and their spouses, and has provided disability and survivors’ benefits for millions of American families. It is a social insurance program with broad effect.
Any congressional debate must address the broad social needs the system now meets, the long-term future of the system, and the financial risks that privatization could place on individuals and government.
Citizens should contact their representatives in Congress and urge them to oppose any attempts to privatize the Social Security system.
