This Newsweek Thing In Bullshit
Good Morning Amerika leads with the story, and footage of angry Iraqis, as if all the violence there is Newsweek's fault, not Gonzales' or bu$h, or Rummy, or Wolfie, blah, blah, blah. Washington Journal leads with that for call-ins, and I noticed they let 3 repugs in a row, and then 2 in a row - no such "error" for ems, oh no. I think this is almost an exact duplicate of the CBS/Dan Rather assassination. It's obvious, and has rOVER's MO ALL OVER IT!:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

1. Yes - Rove
all we can do is hope one of these days, he'll go too far and be standing naked in the street, defenseless. This may be it, after the dust settles.

7. And distract the media from the Downing Street Memo...
Edited on Mon May-16-05 09:43 AM by flpoljunkie
Of course, very few in the media are covering the Downing Street Memo--with the exception of Walter Pincus of the Washington Post, Molly Ivins and today, Paul Krugman keeps it alive.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/16/opinion/16krugman.html?hp

And John McCain, as usual, is covering for Dubya, while the media is in a feeding frenzy over Newsweek's backpedalling on its story about the Koran being flushed down the toilet in Guantanamo.

Newsback is backpedalling because the anonymous government official is backpedalling. Evidently the Pentagon has gotten to him.

6. So, is my impression accurate?
My impression is that whenever a news organization tries to report the truth...they are hit with some kind of 'scandal'.

CBS and the national guard papers, now Newsweek with the story on the Quran thing.

In both cases, the news org is reporting the truth...it's just not truth the Bush Admin wants anyone to know...so, there's a manufactured 'scandal' to discredit the news org.

And the American people just drink the KoolAid while they are fed Bushco propaganda.

16. You're right on
I want to know who the "government official" who provided the information to the reporter is. Convenient this person gave the details, then after the story was written said "oops" and wasn't sure it was true.

10. Somehow, Someday, Someone WILL Blow The Lid
off this stuff. ONE DAY, and it can't be too soon, but NO ONE can do this and get away with it forever!

Thinking back on history most corruption is finally brought into the light. HOW they do this stuff has yet to be revealed, but I have to think that America will come to it's senses and finally realize THE BIG LIE!!!!

If this doesn't happen, we are doomed and we will be in for some disastrous times ahead!! We are no better than some third-world countries who dominate it's citizens with corrupt control of the media! This is SOOOOOOO SICK!!!

17. It's also badly done bullshit
By the time we run these nazis out of our government, our national image will be unsalvagable. Not only is this a clear chicken-shit cover-up, it's a non-retraction and it's done with admittedly heavy-handed input from the Pentagon. We're not just liars, we're clumsy and arrogant liars. It's an insult on every level: we don't even look like we credit anyone else with any sense or intelligence at all by doing such a half-assed move and swearing up and down that there was no Pentagon pressure while repeatedly quoting Pentagon sources about the pressure brought to bear.

As others have done, too, it smacks of the Rather incident and just stinks all around.

Subject: Stop apologizing for telling the truth!
Cc: senator@biden.senate.gov

Yes, the information may have informed the rioters but Newsweek is NOT THE FIRST to report it!

"Detainees also complained about the interference with their ability to pray and the lack of respect given to their religion. For example, the British detainees state that they were never given prayer mats and initially were not provided Korans. They also complained that when the Korans were provided, the guards “would kick the Koran, throw it into the toilet and generally disrespect it.”

http://www.hrw.org/backgrounder/usa/gitmo1004/3.htm#_ftnref27

Your apology will not be believed by the rioters and served only two purposes - first, that the Bush administration can now point to yet another media "blunder" causing them trouble and second, showing intelligent citizens just how much power US government continues to hold over our "free press" (pardon me while I laugh)!

You should either reveal your source or refuse to apologize, then work with other media outlets to put an end to this information suppression that is hurting the U.S. and the world! Americans are living behind our own Iron Curtain and it's happening not only with your permission but with your assistance.

In sadness and anger,
signed with my name, address and phone number

19. Remember that the Grover N. has a meeting with all conservatives
every Wednesday and then comes up with the spin for the next week. Was this article published before last Wednesday?

I mean people want news. And yes there is a war going on. But people publish news during wars to tell people what is going on. It matters how you fight a war.

I am less concerned myself with the whole psychological crap (Koran)than with the water-boarding. But then I am agnostic. So I cannot quite say what putting a book by Newton into the toilet would do to my sensibilities.

It seems to be 'just perfect' in terms of a news-piece. I mean putting a Koran into a toilet is not going to matter to a fundie Islamist militant terrorist, when he has a pact between him, 75 virgins, and Mohamed already. They already think that the US has thrown all of Islam into the toilet. You have to wonder if the leak wasn't meant to rile the more moderates all over the world. And who would gain from that? Perhaps Rove. Perhaps the Islamists themselves. Both are opportunists and would take such an issue (news piece) and use it to dominate their respective enemies and motivate the respective base (not fundie Christians in the case of rove, but the greater fundamentalism: the fundie Americans who blindly believe in the myth of America.

I have no idea. But it seems like all else, news is a commodity. I am sure the people at Newsweek have had their spine - broken on this (in a small way at the very least). I am sure that the press is a little smaller today for the way it was spun.

Did nobody in the Muslim world go insane when the stuff about menstrual blood or Abu Girab came to light? Isn't that when the insurgency began to hit its stride? I think so.

23. You make an excellent point. The 'news' itself wasn't real news.
It's artful in its sheer irrelevant power but then where would any of these neocons be without Tim Osman and the Muslim Brotherhood?
The Great Game is played at many levels but the most important is the one that confounds and distracts the public.

28. Well they have now demonstrated how they will re-frame the next
news piece on torture. They will attack the journalist. We must remember the next time a piece of information comes out how it will be spun and to satirize it before Grover's group meets on Wednesday and does the fax tree on Thursday or Friday.

We must anticipate the fax tree.

news to the journalists who got confirmation from two Pentagon sources. It really doesn't matter how it started when the story gets taken over by ***holes. The problem is the ***holes and their play on reality.

Just like Bush's AWOL story. Old news recycled for political cover. The Afghan warlords were already agitated- probably want a bigger cut of the CIA's heroine pie.

Lawyers allege abuse of 12 at Guantanamo

By Frank Davies

Philadelphia Inquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Twelve Kuwaitis held for about three years at the detention center at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have been physically and psychologically abused, their attorneys said yesterday after their first visit with the detainees.

{ } snip

Some detainees complained of religious humiliation, saying guards had defaced their copies of the Koran and, in one case, had thrown it in a toilet, said Kristine Huskey, who interviewed clients late last month.

Will one someone in the media EVER call bullshit and stand up to the Bush admin? Will they realize that their job is fast becoming nothing BUT propaganda and that maybe they have a conscience and a duty to not back down and BE A REAL AMERICAN.
