New Abu Ghraib photos ready - US Atty requested extension to July 22
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 03:13 PM by cyberpj
So they can release everything (photos AND video) at the same time.

I haven't heard what Judge Hellerstein said but since we didn't see the photos on June 30th, as originally ordered, it would seem that Kelley's extension was granted. Right?

I'm sure they wanted to take the one hit upon release instead of two separate hits in the news.

=========================================
In issuing his order, U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein of New York City gave the government until June 30 to get the photos ready by removing information in the pictures that might identify the victims. The judge said the photographs "are the best evidence the public can have of what occurred" at Abu Ghraib.

David Kelley, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has asked Hellerstein for an extension - until July 22 - to get all the video and still pictures ready for release.

In a June 10 letter to Hellerstein, Kelley said the government would have the photographs ready by June 30. But "in order to address all of the responsive Darby images at one time," he requested that Hellerstein not order the release of any until the video processing is completed July 22.

In issuing his order, U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein of New York City gave the government until June 30 to get the photos ready by removing information in the pictures that might identify the victims.

David Kelley, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has asked Hellerstein for an extension -- until July 22 -- to get all the images, both video and pictures, ready for release.

The Bush administration is likely to pay a public relations penalty for failing to release all of the Abu Ghraib images sooner.

"There would have been short-term discomfort and pain but then it would have been over with," Nikolas Gvosdev, a senior fellow in strategic studies at The Nixon Center here and an analyst of the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal. "These pictures may all be of the same event but they might convey the impression that the abuse is ongoing."

1. either that, or it's just another case of Bush-administration style
"the rules don't apply to us"

It would be interesting to hear what the ACLU has to say about the whole thing. Hey guys; update your website!

2. I get a very strong feeling
that after all this time that they have admittedly been doctoring these photos, that they have significantly changed the impact that the originals might have had and we will all be very surprised at what actually comes out.

i could be wrong, no doubt, but cmon, there is something wrong with telling a criminal to take a few months to prepare his evidence before handing it over to the police.... WTF. We are supposed to be that stupid again, i forgot.

7. I'm curious too. But I'm betting the ACLU have people who can
tell if more than the faces were blurred during "Photoshopping" the photos and videos.

Welcome to DU. :hi:

4. This is bullshit...
When Ken Starr released his report on the Clinton affair, the Republicans fell all over themselves to get in on the Internet(s). I believe the report was there the next day for all to see. Now we're being told that a delay was necessary with these photos/videos in order to limit the negative impact from the public; so the President will take only one hit instead of two, and dispel any feeling that this abuse is "ongoing."

F*ck you, GOP! F*ck you, Bush!

8. diffuse this news
Yes - that was my thought also. Any kind of diversion away from Karl ? Rove is vital to daily WH functioning and they're not going to have his work interrupted by any ole prosecutor or former ambassador.

When Rove made his statement that Valerie Plame was 'fair game' - it seems to me he was admitting her value would be diminished by his words to the reporters. That's not the same thing as casually mentioning someone's name in conversation.

17. Yep. Take out the trash day it is. Still, I think this is too big
to get lost over the weekend. Unless, of course, we get hit with another terror warning or event. Watch for it.

...that we have people getting prepared for this event.

When Abu Gharib first broke, the emotional impact on the faces of people exposed to such a crime committed by our government was an awful sight, and their response was as negative towards a free press as any ever seen.

These new tapes are likely to open a new sore on the body-politic which could lead to unintended circumstances. Let's hope our people are out ahead of it this time.
