Talking point: Bush turning back on "friend" Rove, who got him elected.
We on the left are probably far more aware of the part Rove played in getting Bush elected than those who Rove manipulated to vote for Bush.

Unless I'm mistaken, Bush has, on occasion, referred to Rove as his friend. There is no doubt that Rove is a trusted advisor, in any case.

I see this as an opportunity to bring Bush's "leadership" and "sincerity" further into question.

Today, I discussed this with Bushbot co-worker, mentioning how I thought it was really awful how Bush seemed to distance himself fronm the man who "did so much to support his re-election." Note that I chose my phrasing VERY carefully.

Damn if it didn't make her stop and think. This is a woman who has metaphorically stabbed me in the back, criticized co-working friends of mine to me, etc. I listen disinterestedly, and refuse to sink to her level, but she has no idea how much I truly despise her (need I mention she isn't terribly bright?).

As I compose my LTTE for the DU Activist Corps today, I may mention this. I'm going to wait for a bit of feedback from you smart people.

Any problems with this?

1. I've been thinking of an opposite talking point
"George Bush is more loyal to Rove than he is to America."

He said whoever turned out to be the leaker would be gone. When the GJ is over, and if Rove is proven to be the leaker, he'd better be gone.

5. I think a case can be made for both.
One reason this worked to a degree on my "friend" is that she's one of those who believes the claptrap about Bush being such a "genuine" person, good Christian, downhome guy.

She's one of those many deluded into thinking there is absolutely NO POLITICIAN in Bush (I've seen this in several Bushbots).

10. I don't understand that at all--
(I don't mean your friend). Just those that seem to not see any level of 'politician' in b.

He's always seemed incredibly transparent to me. I don't understand those that see him as the 'genuine' person, good Christian and down home guy. I know in saying this on these boards I am preaching to the choir and you guys don't get it either.

It's just so baffling on so many levels how someone that is as inarticulate as he is--a guy who seems to struggle with the simplest of concepts--

12. I know, but she's a living, breathing, example of the phenomenon.
And I've seen it among others as well.

Granted, they usually are less educated, less social, etc., but they buy the image hook, line, and sinker.

I think it has something to do with just that: his lack of lucidity, his stumbling on simple words and concepts, etc.

He APPEARS to be like them dealing with those "elites" in the press and of the opposition. They like that.

14. That is so retarded! If he were a minority and not a priveleged
caucasian male, people would be quick to say how 'ignorant' and
'uneducated' he appeared, despite the pedigrees that state otherwise.

It's infuriating to see these double standards still in existence.

13. Be careful of the statement " * said leaker would be gone"
I've only seen video of him saying "leaker would be taken care of". In bushspeak, this could mean (a. given a medal, (b. given a medal, (c. given a free pass, (d. given a medal....you get the idea.

9. He certainly isn't defending him in any way, shape, or form.
I'm referring specifically to today's press conference.

Contrast how he discusses this matter with how he railed against the "attcks" on his "friend," Alberto Gonzales, last week.

He was decidedly on the offense there. This was an extremely defensive posture for someone who usually does attack the opposition.

He ain't attacking this time.

4. I'm not crazy about it
I think we should be tying Rove to Bush like an anchor.

I think when we point out that Bush is dumping a guy who everyone now knows is a treasonous scum-bag it just looks like Bush is a good, decent man who no longer wants to be associated with the now evil Rove.

We need people to understand just how much Bush and Rove are the same political creature.

7. Perhaps you are right, in retrospect. However, I do see this as a possible
water-cooler talking point.

I couldn't believe anything could get through to the little Bushbot I trefer to, but being the lonely cranky bitch she is, somehow this hit home with her.

8. Yeah, it all depends on who you're talking to
No one talking point works for every discussion, which is something I wish both political parties could get through their head.

But that goes without saying.

15. Laura called Rove a "dear friend" today, because she is smart. *
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 08:06 PM by McCamy Taylor
has crafted a reputation of sticking with friends through thick and thin. Though they have tried to keep Rove/Goebels in the shadows in the past, watch * him to start getting palsy with Rove as he prepares to pardon him. That way *'s supporters will say "That's * for you. He will stand beside his friends even if it hurts him politically." Not understanding that in this case to dump Rove would be the big political mistake.
