Phil Donohue absolutely destroyed O'Reilly last night
Phil Donahue is no longer the wimpy talk show host that I remember. Last night he absolutely destroyed O'Reilly. I'm sure if they hadn't been sitting at the same table, Donahue's mike would have been cut.

We need to get this guy on TV more often.

Billy (as Donohue repeatedly called him) started off listing Cindy Sheehan's supposed sins, and Phil was off and running, accusing Billy of participating in the marginalization attempt of Sheehan by the right. Billy proudly claimed that he was "the leader of the pack."

Donohue: Cindy Sheehan is one tough mother and nothing you say or anyone else is going to slow her down.

Bill: That's fine, she's has a right-

Phil:....You can't hurt her, she's already taken the biggest punch in the nose that a woman can take.

Bill, in his infinite wisdom asks: How?

Phil: She's lost a son-

Bill: Oh, OK...

Then Phil plugged the rally in DC on 9/24. Billy wanted to talk about Cindy's radical positions, but Phil went on to attack the war in Iraq.

Billy started pointing his finger at that point and questioned the "cut and run" leftist position.

Donohue then said that O'Reilly wouldn't send his kids to die there, and the frequently masturbating-to-harassing-phone-sex giant head started boiling over, yelling about his "...nephew just joined the army," and, "...he's a patriot, so don't denigrate his service or I'll boot you right off the set!"

Wasn't Cindy's son a patriot, also, Bill?

Phil replied that, "Loud doesn't mean right," and, "you nephew is not your kid."

I could go on, but it's so great to watch and listen to, I encourage everyone to check it out.

I hope Media Matters lets us know how Billy will spin this tomorrow. I'm tempted to listen myself....

1. Sorry I missed it
I always love seeing O'Lielly get his ass handed to him. I can't stand that guy, though it's a tough choice deciding who's more obnoxious between him and Sean Hannity.

Also, I've missed seeing Donahue on TV since his show got cancelled a couple years back. It pissed me off when MSRNC dumped Donahue's show despite it being their highest-rated talk show at the time. I had stopped watching it much anyway when Donahue seemed to be shifting the format to a more "human interest"-type show than the political talk show it started out as (I heard that this shift was due to pressure from MSRNC as well). Glad Donahue's still doing a good job fighting the good fight; anyone getting liberal messages out in the media is good compared to all the right-wing crap dominating the media for the last few years.

69. That's why I worry about Keith Olbermann's show
I'm still shocked he's still on the air! The stories he does and everything. Wow. He covered the Ohio election a good bit when it was making news and interviewed Conyers and he told the Saddam statue story. I'm surprised he's still there and I wonder what his secret is.

And O'Reilly's bombast is so over the top, you gotta wonder if he's a shill.

We need Phil back on the air.

Apparently Crooks and Liars has changed their WMV format. It is no longer one supported under MPlayer on Linux. That's too bad. It would be nice if Crooks and Liars would use a format that was supported across all computer platforms, like good ol' MPEG.

Dems could have doubled hell tripled the offer and most likly got them for themselves. Hell,Keith Olberman was BEGGING for someone, anyone to buy the tapes--that guy HATES O'Reillys guts.

Dems could have bought them and used them, played them over and over etc. If that would have happened O'Reilly would be lucky to be a janitor at an AM station somewhere.

He was spot on and stopped O'Reilly in his tracks. Even got O'Reilly to personally admit that he didn't like the war, nor how it was implimented. Even accused Bill of supporting a war that he expected other people's kids to fight. LOTS of good information from Donahue.

He's as sharp as ever.

on Stephanie Miller's show...

Donohue did a great job. The only problem is that Phil doesn't own the microphone. In this case, O'liely can wait until Phil is off the show and spin it any way he wants...it will, of course, be a pack of lies, distortions and ego-centric ramblings...but he will get the chance to do it.

Phil NEEDs to own another microphone....maybe replacing Rita Cosby...

26. It has been my experience that I can tell when someone is genuinely tough
and not to be messed with...

Bill O'reilly, although a large man, is the type of person I would have smacked the piss out of in my younger days.

My classic line was "C'mon, I'll embarrass you in front of your friends."
(sometimes I was wrong and got severely beaten, but mostly I was right.)

Phil, on the other hand, is the type of guy that I would not mess around with. You can tell that he's Catholic School tough...

He's the type of guy whose after school brawls would transcend the school yard to other schools, and I would cut 6-8th period and hop on 3 busses to watch it.

GO PHIL!

Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 10:13 AM by Straight Shooter
What an arrogant, aggressive prick Billy O'Reilly is, pointing his finger continually like that. Almost as bad as poking it in someone's chest.

And he thinks somehow he is more patriotic because his nephew joined the service? Did you hear him go on and on about not denigrating his nephew? Maybe he has another nephew who is in jail, or has been arrested, or is a wife-beater, or maybe just a telephone pervert? Will Billy claim that nephew, too?

Drowning men do grasp at straws. Iraqis deserve democracy? Did Billy give a flying flip for the Iraqis before bush's rush to war? Hell no! He never gave them a second thought. Probably called them all ragheads in his private conversations.

Billy O'Reilly is the lead prick in the pack of pricks.

36. Wow! Most excellent, Mr. Donahue!
Phil knows how the RW shill game is played, and he fought fire with fire.

These guys are so predictable...when Phil told O'liely that he wouldn't send his own kid to Iraq and Billy shot back that his nephew enlisted, Billy immediately went on the typical RW defensive move of accusing the "lefty" of not honoring/denigrating servicemen and being unpatriotic...a very predictable tactic.

Believe me, the RW is counting on the left turning against the military as they did during Vietnam...they never counted on the left embracing servicemen and a grieving mother of a dead soldier being the bullhorn.

GO PHIL!

42. First time I'd seen O'Lielly
So that's what I've been missing while being informed via the Internet and short wave radio. All his yelling and feigned outrage. What a wally! It was insulting just seeing the clip. Donohue did well. A pity the "opposition" party couldn't do the same (kudos to the few who are standing up).

A few weeks ago, I also heard Flush for the first time. The BBC world service played one of his clips. Sounded like a sputtering, drunken, third grade graduate.

The eejits who swear by these dingos are an insult to the term "eejit". Including my father, who probably had some sense kicked into him by our ancestors now that he's joined them.

43. This is a absolute MUST SEE. It's critical.
Only someone who is experienced with bullies, like Springer or Donohue, could have stood up to the intimidation and lying of O'Reilly.

This should be watched, and watched again to see how Phil worked it. For someone like myself who rolls over, this was extremely empowering.

What I learned here is that we, The Democrats and liberal thinkers and seekers of The Truth, must be organized. We are smart, but we aren't congealed.

I propose a page on DU where a concise, simple, page of responses to questions be posted. One page. How to deal with the punches that the bullying, lying right wing are throwing at us. It's for the weakest of us. The ones who need support in our fight for good and truth.

We could accomplish this by dissecting things like this video. Just this one video could serve as a starter.

DO NOT respond to their inane questions and accusations. They are just trying to throw you off your game.

DO NOT back down...no matter what crap they throw at you. A bully will always back down, as we saw last night.

DO NOT whitewash your language. Death, destruction and lies aren't pretty. Stop being so damn polite.

45. Cute: "the 'cut and run' leftist position"...
The Bush Cartel invades a helpless country (rendered helpless by 1st Gulf war, their air force gone, tough UN-WMD inspections, and economic sanctions), slaughters over 100,000 innocent people with their bombs alone (according to the British doctors' report), and imprisons and tortures thousands, earning the hostility of the entire world, destroys Iraq's infrastructure, and plunders and loots the place, and robs U.S. taxpayers blind, and, due to the looting of global corporate predators like Halliburton, completely blows the occupation, creating three warring tribes and a civil war heading for Vietnam II...

They're damn right we want to "cut and run" from that colossal, unmitigated, preventable DISASTER!

But WE don't want to leave Iraq in the lurch. THEY do, every day. Iraq and Iraqis do not concern them. Only pig-trough profits do. They left Iraq in the lurch a long time ago!

WE would create a U.N. protectorate--where the matter properly belongs--and convene a world-wide peace conference, to engage Iraq's neighbors and others in UNDOING Bush's disaster. It can only be done with international help--which the Bush Cartel war profiteers have completely excluded.

"Cut and run"! Were there ever a worse bunch of jerks on the face of this earth than the spouters of Karl Rove "talking points"?!

49. Bill O'Reilly is a typical rightwinger
although he lies about that too, claims to be Independent. They threaten a lot, act tough, but when they are faced with someone willing to take them on, they back down.

Remember O'Reilly when he was accused of sexual harrassment? He was all over the place, talking about how he 'wasn't going to be like others who settled these things, he was going to fight it all the way to the SC, if necessary'. It sounded great, but a week later he payed millions to the accuser.

I wish AAR would offer Phil a show ~ he was fired from MSNBC right after one of his best shows AIRC. He had on Scott Ritter and his former English UN inspector boss, Butler. Scott Ritter was incredible as far as giving the facts to the public, that night. He made minced meat out of Butler, he had documentation of everything he said. The show was explosive in that it was the first time anyone had actually spoken the truth so openly, and with papers, since the propaganda machine had taken over. Ritter got standing ovations for his part that night, and Butler ended up having to agree with him.

The next I heard, the show was being cancelled. I couldn't believe it since it was their best show. Not long after, the rumors about Scott Ritter began, and he was no longer welcome on television either.

This period in journalism will be remembered as the McCarthy era is, imo. Eventually, after the disastrous Savage/Weiner Show, I think they got another rightwinger, and that was eventually cancelled for low ratings. Next, Tucker Carlson, whose ratings are so low, it's laughable.

I wonder why MSNBC is so willing to be a failure? I guess Dan Rather is right about the 'fear' in the press.

I wish I had seen that. O'Reilly is no match for Phil Donahue, who seems so friendly and nice, but as someone above said, is a Catholic schoolyard scrapper when it comes to debate, and he does it without screaming.

Wish there were more like him on the air ~ next, Hannity? I doubt Hannity would take up the challenge. He'd just keep yelling, which is all he can do, or maybe walk off as he did from AAR when he couldn't win the argument.

74. MSNBC is owned by GE
GE is a big recipient of corporate welfare. They are making quite a bit of money under *. Money is coming in from the Iraq "reconstruction", loosened environmental regulations for their "clean" coal technology and nuclear reactors, etc.

50. Jeremy Glick
Jeremy Glick said that Bush SENIOR would have to be considered somewhat responsible for 9/11 as he supported the training and arming of the mujhadeen during his tenure with the CIA. He didn't say that Bush Jr. collaborated with Al Quaeda on the 9/11 attacks. Bill O'Reilly is the kind of insane that is truly scary. Instead of altering HIS thoughts when he hears facts that do not gel with his perceptions, he changes the facts to suit his ideas. Bush does the same thing. It is mind boggling to me that they keep this guy on television.

He hates to be one-upped, and especially on his own show.

55. Wrote a Letter to FOX news...
Title: Integrity

I understand that FOX news has a political agenda and, generally, I don't blame you for completely lacking anything that remotely resembles journalistic integrity in your approach to stories. Most people know that you are not REALLY a news network, you are entertainment for a certain element of society. That portion of the population in red states which can actually afford a TV, I guess. I also get that Murdoch's love of the conservative agenda is due less to any kind of moral high ground, but due more to the fact that the current administration's policy favors the extremely rich and big business and Murdoch is laughing all the way to the bank for both reasons. Hey, this is America, right?? What good American allows a little thing like the truth get in the way of making a buck?

But how does even a Republican shill like Brit Hume tolerate being on the same network as Bill O'Reilly? O'Reilly has truly earned the nickname 'O'Lielly'. Does he do a single show where he does not completely reinvent facts to suit his premise? Like his comments about Jeremy Glick during his interview with Phil Donahue (BTW, I really think Phil looks good these days, don't you??) Anyway, O'Lielly says that Jeremy Glick accused President Bush of collaborating with Al Quaeda on 9/11. He has access to his own transcripts, right?? He CAN read, right? Jeremy Glick did not say anything like that. At all. Really.

You know, you can tell me, I won't tell anybody....you guys laugh at him behind his back, don't you?? You all pretend to be serious and respect him when he is facing you and as soon as O'Lielly turns his head, you guys are twirling your fingers in circles near your temple behind his back, right?? I just know somebody there keeps a loofah in their top desk drawer and pulls it out when he isn't looking in an effort to make the rest of the room crack up. I bet you also have to keep a shower right off the 'news' room so that anybody at FOX with a conscience can scrub off that dirty feeling after O'Lielly airs. "Anybody at FOX with a conscience"....Ha ha ha...I made a funny!!

Anyway, I don't want you to think that I actually WATCH O'Lielly or anything else on FOX. My shower is too far away from the den. I would actually have to walk all the way to the bedroom and I am not sure I could stand it. No, I usually catch your show on Crooks and Liars. Which, when you think about it, makes sense.

Thank you for your time,
Irene Bolick

When 'billy' actually said that the war in iraq could turn out to be a huge disaster. I think he started to realize he was losing the arguement.

75. I've always love Donahue....
"Do not denigrate him"...!

That's the sort of strong position these Repugs have on the war issue, that can be hard to fight against. Dems and anti-war activist should have a similar strong "patriotic" statement to shut people up....

The Anti-War movement need to turn into a 100% Patriotic movement that is upholding the US constitution. No one should dare question our patriotism or motives..!!

I feel that most Dems still shy away from "passionately" joining the Anti-War movement.
