After that blew up, CBS was under pressure from the Administration to "atone" and it spiked the Niger story saying they would run it later but never did.

I think CBS also said it was "too close to the election" to run a story that might impact the election, if memory serves. Imagine that. A story of such significance that it may influence the outcome of the Presidential election and they withold it from the American public.
