Where in New Orleans...
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 10:09 PM by catnhatnh
...were the same Tasers are so profligately used throughout the rest of our country???While on the board we argue about the applicability of this item while everyone from Grandma to Grandniece gets a jolt, how was a man shot to death while surrounded by 15 officers????I've seen a lot of apologists here for excesses...but why is this guy dead?

1. Don't go to a gun fight with a knife.
Nuff said.

Excessive measures were taken, can't explain it away, it's on tape.

3. Darling...
I love you and read your (usually right wing) posts on policing matters.Even tapes you support I find at times disturbing...But I find this one a fish in the barrel deal and openly admire your take on this...if I missed you merry christmas...and to a degree you are right, sometimes I support a clown I myself would have probably shot...

5. LOL -- the rightwingers do not consider my law enforcement stances
as right wing or conservative. I'm not sure which stances you believe I have posted that reflect a right wing perspective. I'm am curious to know what issues you feel I am right wing.

I am a liberal, and I have worked in law enforcment and corrections passionately pushing the liberal agenda, not the right wing stance. I don't support the use of the taser, I consider it a dangerous and all too often deadly weapon, I consider the lack of proper training and adequate man power to be a reason why abuse of citizens has not only increased, but appears to be acceptable. I see the poor funding of law enforcement an affront to the citizens and a mockery to their "war on terror" stance. I've never supported any "tapes" that I recall.

At my own risk, I am known and have been known as a bleeding heart, tree hugging, left wing liberal that cares more about the rights of the accused than I do the officers. Part of my job for many years was teaching officers that the accused and inmates do in fact have civil rights that MUST be respected.

So please, share with me my right wing leanings as I consider the accusation an insult. I believe you have me mistaken with someone else.

My christmas was good, thanks for asking. I hope you had a great holiday.

20. You are right....
...and I DO apologize...I should have said"right side of the board (DU)" and not left the inference of "right side of the political spectrum"....as in some folks here would not allow a cop to raise his voice in a confrontation, never mind a weapon, whereas I have seen you defend emergency workers at times...for which I thank you, having spent several years as an EMT and being full well acquainted with the public under duress. It was after a long day and again I apologize and further though we would sometimes disagree I am always happy to find one of your posts...regards,Cat

2. The cops are at fault for forcing this situation...
They had a duty to subdue him but they escalated the situation, backed him into a corner, and brought themselves into a proximity where the knife could actually pose a threat.

They could have pulled out their batons and used them. It is highly doubtful any police officer would have been touched by the knife had they done so given that there were 10+ cops on the scene.

They could have simply surrounded him at a reasonable distance, 5 to 10 yards and waited him out.

They could have had just one guy shoot him in the arm where he was holding the knife.

Turning him into Swiss cheese is just more typical testerone poisoned police overkill. Remember that poor guy in New York they shot 41 times?

4. No dude...wrong...
...these guys aren't Bruce Willis in a movie....they are for the better or worse, clowns like us...In my job I can bring things down to a certain finity, but have no belief this represents real life or what, say,a cop sees...

6. You're telling me...
Ten muscled up cops with batons had no alternative than to unload their S&W 9mm's on this guy...

Sorry but I simply don't find this acceptable police behavior.

I'm sure we are going to find that the man they shot was not in his right mind.

Oh I just thought of one MORE alternative... What happened to Kujo???

They could have sicked some dogs on this guy without killing him.

8. As I point out in my post immediately below yours.
They have raid shields and could have very easily used the raid shield to deflect the knife and take him down.

This is definitely excessive force.

The police did not act properly, they had all day to wait on the guy.

10. LOL
I was bite by one of their horses while in the French Quarter during a jazz fest weekend -- I was drunk, but I wasn't stupid. I knew not to make a fuss and I actually apologized to the cop riding the horse.

The lock up in NOLA is not some place I would want to get lost at.

12. I was petting one horse (with permission of course)
and the horse next to it took offense and bit my arm, bruising the bone and taking a hunk of me with it.

The cop on the horse that bit me said I should know better and he told me to get lost.

Trying to find peroxide at 2:00 a.m. is not always easy or safe in NOLA. :freak:

Did you develop the overwhelming urge to count by stomping?

Bad Trigger!

15. LOL - I didn't even ask the horses name.
I just held my arm and made my way down the street.

In addition to the hang over the next morning, my arm hurt like hell and I still have a scar.

Live and learn ...

DO NOT PET A POLICE OFFICER'S HORSE.

7. They had all day to wait him out.
He did not lunge at any of them and he did not threaten any innocent by stander.

They could have brought in the raid shield, used to enter a building (with officers hiding behind it).
The shield would have deflected the knife and they could have taken him down with injury to any officer and without killing him.

You don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Excessive force.

14. I get the impression they are trying to make up for the desertions.
Bad press. Now perhaps they are getting medieval to toughen up their image. Or they are just ass-clowns. Same difference.

16. It was obvious that they had poor training.
And it looked like they were frightened, if that makes any sense.
