This is a parallel thread. I wonder about the motives behind the original thread, so I am here to present the flip side of the argument. The reason I think that "Bush WIRETAPPED" is not going to die an early death is because in a recent poll, when asked what they think of wiretapping for national security, a whopping 72% of the respondents gave it a great big knee jerk "Disapprove." Why? Because the word "wiretap" conjures up images of Nixon and Watergate and the I- word. The same question framed with some euphamism for "wiretap" only got a 45% disapprove.
My local newspaper keeps running whole page letters to the editor special features of outraged citizens spewing their wrath at Bush and the adminsitration for daring to wiretap American citizens. People who did not think that lying about WMDs was grounds for impeachment are using the I word. Half the letters mention Nixon and Watergate.
People learn by patterns. They see something happen, they assume that is how the world works. They saw Nixon wiretap, commit burglaries and violate the rights of his political enemies at home. They saw him get caught. They saw him get forced out of office. They saw that nothing bad happened to the country. There was no lapse in national security. The commies did not over run us. We exited Viet Nam peacefully. We had a time of relative peace and prosperity. This all happened 30 odd years ago when those of us in power now were in our formative years. We got imprinted very well with the message.
"Hmmm," we think. "Things were pretty good after we got rid of Nixon. Let's do it again."
All Bush's opponents---Dems, Independents, foreigners, Republicans---have to do is keep calling wiretaps "wiretaps" and Americans will fill in the details themselves.
And dont forget---Bush ADMITTED the crime. In America, you never ever say you did it. He should have pretended to accept responsibility (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) while implying that Cheney or someone else actually did it.
Moral: use the word "WIRETAP" often and loudly.
