<snip>

Only six prospective buyers have checked it out, the Arizona Republic says. That led to a half-million-dollar price cut.

A year ago, there were 145 homes priced at $500,000 or more for sale in Phoenix. Now, there are 1,341. Houses were selling in days last year, but now, it's taking an average of six weeks.

McCain and his wife, Cindy, who grew up in the house, want to downsize.

2. Yeah, my neighbor is trying to sell his house too
He lost his job at the end of last summer. The "Price Reduced" sign went up on Monday. The thing is, he can't really afford to lower the price since that house is all he has left. He has 3 kids, one of whom is in the Nat'l Guard and will probably end up in Iraq.

He worked for his brother's landscaping/snow removal business. He is a really nice guy and would plow our driveway for free when it snowed real heavy. In the summer we would bring over some beers for him and his wife to enjoy on their deck. But the business folded in the fall.

I guess in Michigan, with all of our job losses, people are finding it cheaper to do their own lawn care now, can't afford to pay a small local business to it for them.

So I don't have much sympathy for motherfucker McCain right now. AFAIC, he can take that house and shove it up his ass.

15. Sorry to hear about your neighbor
There's something terribly wrong when someone who works hard can't make it in this country. But I'm afraid we're going to see more of this kind of thing.

I know of someone who has a small business and was struggling. He managed to stay afloat due to a cash infusion into his business from a life insurance policy he had on his daughter. That's right--the death of his daughter helped him to stay in business. She died unexpectedly--she was only 28. I don't know how much longer he will last (financially and emotionally), but I'm sure if given a choice, he would rather have lost his business and still have his child.

over three million when the minimum wage hasn't been raised in years. Some DUer suggested it was OK since McCain's wife grew up in this house. Reasonable inherited wealth is OK, but when inherited wealth is so disproportionate compared to the earned income of the ordinary worker who contributes to society with his blood, sweat and tears, it is still obscene.

21. it can get pretty cold here in the winter. and the last few years,
we have "no burn" days because of the pollution. the older homes have wood burning fireplaces, but the newer ones have gas. in order to meet the pollution standards for a woodburning it would cost about $8,000.00.

huge houses -- 8 baths -- a few might just be powder rooms. it was more common to build these large houses when the housing market was down.

11. McCain house
I live just a few blocks away, albeit on a more modest street. Home values have gone crazy here as of late. McCain's house is not as palatial as the photo would indicate; someone must have been laying face down in the grass with camera to make the yard look so large. Any 3000 sq ft home on 1/3 acre in this area is now over $800K.

23. i have a house on 2-1/2 acres. the house is about 2800 sq. ft.
they tell me it's worth a million. i don't believe it. that is just the inflated price right now. maybe it's worth $700,000.

BTW: i bought those 2-1/2 acres in early 1997 for $48,000. now one acre is going for over $300,000 and if you're on a hillside which i am it's more. we're not rich we just bought land and built at a good time. Luck???

and if i were to sell it i would have to pay just as much or more for another house. it's gone crazy here -- a new 1300 sq. ft. house on a tiny lot is going for over $200,000. when i moved here in 89 you could get a new house that size for about $60,000.

is big but not enormous. What in the world did the McCains ever need that much space for?

33. Think how much it would cost to keep such a place up.
How much would you have to pay to put on a new roof? How about the cost of gardening? electricity? cleaning? Just keeping the plumbing operating would be an expense. And then think: McCain also has to keep up a residence in D.C., and that place is also one in which he can entertain and meet with people. Is he that wealthy independently? How does the lifestyle of some other veteran, say Wesley Clark, compare? We know that Kerry married money. Did McCain do the same?

30. you're absolutely right. i just googled it. looks like they earn
about $160,000. my husband has made that back when his company was giving bonuses and i can tell you that we do not live like senators. maybe it's because they get so many perks. i remember years ago hearing that they have a barber and beauty shop available to them for free -- i guess their meals are free, and i guess they don't have to worry about saving for retirement because their pensions are so high. but even after all this i don't know. my husband always says that when you give money to politicians for their campaigns, some of it has a way of trickling down into their pockets.

32. Problem could be that the house is in Phoenix
One of the worst hellholes in America. Everything that's bad about Los Angeles, PLUS it's over 100 degrees for 5 months of the year. Oh, and it's crawling with the most odious of freeper scum.

The house doesn't look like anything special, except that it has a lot of square footage.

Mark it down to 700K and count yourself lucky if you sell it.
