Study: New Orleans could lose 80 percent of black population
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 05:40 PM by SoCalDem
The operative word in the study is "lose".. These folks weren't "lost"..they were transported, exterminated, purged, evicted, expelled, expunged, removed, banished, cast off....etc..

Lost is such a benign word..like I lost my keys, I have a lost kitten, I lost a baby tooth.. The word does not apply in this case..one bit..:grr:

Study: New Orleans could lose 80 percent of black population
By Michelle R. Smith, Associated Press Writer | January 26, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The city of New Orleans could lose up to 80 percent of its black population if people displaced by Hurricane Katrina are not able to return to their damaged neighborhoods, according to an analysis released Thursday by a Brown University sociologist.

Blacks and the poor were disproportionately affected by Katrina, according to the study led by Brown Professor John R. Logan. The analysis concludes that the difficulty in moving back to the city could mean a massive loss of population, overwhelmingly among blacks.

New Orleans was more than 65 percent black before Katrina hit in August, but it appears most of the estimated 135,000 residents who have been able to return are white. Mayor Ray Nagin recently apologized for saying New Orleans would remain a "chocolate city" as he tried to allay fears that blacks would not return.

The study found that if New Orleans' returning population was limited to the neighborhoods undamaged by Katrina, about half the white population would not return and 80 percent of its black population would not.

"There's very good reason for people to be concerned that the future New Orleans will not be a place for the people who used to live there, that there won't be room in New Orleans for large segments of the population that used to call it home," said Logan, who studies urban areas.

1. Flushed would be more accurate
I'm not calling black people crap, I'm saying that they were left there to die when the water came in and washed everything away and back into the Gulf.

13. Nakba
This was, plain and simple, an American .

The relocation sites were politically selected to make Louisiana a safe "Red State" and to keep the State of Refuge from becoming "Blue States."

Andchoice of localities within states were chosen with electoral considerations front and center.

4. The"government" has abandoned Social Darwinism
It takes too much time. They're now using Social Intelligent Design.

And other than CNN (occasionally) and a few major newspapers, where's the coverage of this?

Goddamn it.

5. Genocide. Have any of you read the book, "Sundown Towns" ?
I haven't but only caught the author on BookTV. He estimates that there are 10,000 towns in these United States where Black people are not welcome after the sun goes down.

And the Bush base becomes more and more overtly racist.

We are going to have to fight the civil rights debate ALL OVER AGAIN. And that battle has started on the Gulf Coast.

women, the disabled and the mentally ill.

We have to strap on our boots. Because unless my tin foil isn't conducting properly, war was just declared on us on the Gulf Coast.

14. The only reason we welcomed so many NOLA refugees
in our community is because Rev Cecil Willims of Glide Methodist Church stood up to the Gubernator Boobengrabber -- and got the housing coalition rolling. And he did it against Gubernator Boobengrabber's wishes.

The story came out on Bernie Ward's show and Ray Taliaferro's show in late October.

17. It's part of the Plan.
New Orleans, for most people in the U.S., was already kind of a theme park. This will further the development of GumboWorld. Drunken fratboys cruisin' the Vieux Carre, lookin' for bare headlights.

(under new management)

So much to see..so much to do.. Your family will remember the trip for years ...

Toxicland...(exciting display..ride in your own hazmat-mobile)

Petro-Village...(an amazing amalgamation of pipes and intricate maze of oil tanks)

Pirates of the French Quarter..(must be "this tall" to enter) Don't forget to buy a signed 8x10 of Mike Brown...aka Brownbeard...it's a heckova picture and well worth $50

The USS FEMA (fun for the kiddies....must bring own provisions)

Georgie's Fishin' Hole..EVERYBODY catches a fish..no poles necessary..just scoop one up (they're specially trained to float and to be very still for the kiddies)..then run on down to the Fry Shack, and they'll cook it right up for you.. (sponsored by Mobil/Chevron)

Dubya Gump's Wild Shrimp Ride..(fun for young and old..just don't eat the shellfish)

W's Dumbo Gumbo House...featuring glow in the dark oysters, oiled pelican, Texaco Tea, and the house specialty.."all the better to see you" 3-eyed snapper..

Carpetbagger Cafe....featuring a fabulous $10 mini-burger..(freedom fries are only $5 extra) Bottled Iridescent Bayou Water only $4.50..(don't ask for the recipe..it's a secret)

Bab's Oatmeal Hut...Everyone always said she looked like the Quaker Oats guy..Grab up a bowl of steaming hot cajun oatmeal...then Make a RUN for the porta potties..

Beads R Us....Authentic BK beads (before Katrina)..Buy 'em by the handful, or string 'em together for your own souvenir..(Keep away from children..a choking and poison hazard)

Sign up for the GrayLine Tour of "Old N'Awlins"..Respirator and protective clothing included..... Includes a side trip to the Nature preserve (waders included also)..Camera not necessary ...the animals are still "evacuated").. Picture postcards of the former wildlife are available in the gift shoppe at the end of the tour.

And for the finale...don't miss the moonlight cruise across lake Ponchartrain at dusk.....But..be sure to Pick a speedy boat.. the trick is to make it to the other side before the boat disintegrates.. Don't quite make it?? Don't worry..Just grab on to one of the many simulated roofs in the lake, and hang on until the USS FEMA comes to get you..

find the truth.

We will stop these abuses.

And we will honor the dead and ask forgiveness from the living.

As long as we stay in touch with what is really happening, with the truth, we can hope for change.

On edit: we can work to make it so.

27. I wonder.
So many of these poor people are lost and disoriented. Will we ever hear the truth. Sometimes I watch NOLA stations just to hear what's going on. This is one of the worst tragedies of my life particularly since it did not have to happen. I will never get over what happened to New Orleans.

It will be mighty unlikely if NOLA ever has much input anymore from anyone other than the "lilywhites".
There will be no effort made to repatriate anyone who "left".

31. orleans parish has been open since oct. 5
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 07:37 PM by pitohui
and even lower 9th ward (which is unsafe, really) has been open since dec. 5 or thereabouts

they are welcome to return, no one is stopping anyone from returning

southern cameron parish (white) was only opened 2 weeks ago for daylight hours

so the cries of genocide, etc. are completely untrue, in fact, nagin opened orleans against advice to accommodate those who were clamoring to hurry up and be allowed to return to their homes, there was no such action or pressure taken on behalf of majority white parishes

from a distance you are reading stuff into it that isn't fact-based, to be perfectly honest

we can't put a gun to people's heads and force them to return if they have found a better situation elsewhere, for the v. poor, louisiana offers some of the poorest welfare and SSI benefits in the nation, our only advantage for the poor was our charity hospital system, which is now completely destroyed

because of the lack of housing and because, especially, the lack of hospital facilities, it would be wrong and irresponsible to encourage vulnerable people, such as vulnerable old people or v. young mothers w. children, to return, the homeowner is going to return and reclaim their home, it is the renters who are not returning and rightly so, there is nothing to rent, would you have the poorest and most vulnerable live in tents? w.out access to medical care? and w.out any chance of the levees being completed to protect all low-lying areas before hurricane season 2006 begins on june 1?

i am more sorry to see the loyal black voter go than you are, i have to live here, but i can't ask people to risk their v. lives for me, they have to make the decisions right for their own families

So Hurricane Mike can kill everyone in 2009?

New Orleans is one of the dumber projects in modern engineering. The French had the right idea in building on the smaller section of relatively high ground.

We're the ones who went and filled the swamp in with people. Bad idea. Shouldn't have done it. Shouldn't go do it again.
