Impeachment is always on my mind. I want to see the impeachment of Bush more than just about anything, so I wrote up a couple quick drafts of letters which you can read below if you want, and tell me if it's a possible idea we should do or not. One letter is if we win back the House in November and one is if we don't. The day after the November elections, I plan on sending a copy of it to the elected Democrats who are supposed to represent us. I'm going to send these letters in physical snail mail as well as by email. Maybe it's something we could all do, each in our own wording. Imagine if they got similar letters from 10 or 20,000 DU'ers in the weeks following the election. Anyway...
The first letter below is if the election goes well. The second letter is if it doesn't.
Letter #1: (If we re-take the House)
Dear XXX:
Congratulations! Yesterday was a historic day for our party and the country. The voters have expressed their displeasure of 6 years under Bush, and the pendulum has finally shifted in a better direction.
We the voters have spent tireless hours, days, weeks, & months supporting your efforts, writing letters, figuring out ways to improve our chances, & sending donations. Now it's your turn to return the favor. We would like one of your first orders of business to be the Impeachment of George W Bush. We have the majority in the House to impeach, and it goes without saying that this president should be impeached ASAP. Whether or not he's convicted is another story, but he needs to be impeached. If there is any justice in this world, if there is any hope for the future of ALL the people in this country, you need to impeach him.
I know that there will be much talk of "not dragging the country through another impeachment" and how we now should turn our energy towards 2008 and concentrate on getting the support of the country behind a Democratic Presidential victory in that year. Let me just say this, though: Yesterday, as always, I voted Democrat straight down the line, and I plan on doing so in 2008. The only thing that could tempt me to do otherwise is if there is no impeachment in 2007. That would be unforgivable. Justice must be served and there should be no compromising on this matter. There can be no letting bygones be bygones.
Very sincerely, X X
Letter #2 (if we don't re-take the House)
Dear XXX,
Yesterday was a series of ups and downs. It would've been nicer if we could've taken back the House, but we can still use it as a springboard to gain some more respect for 2008. The voters have sent the message that, as much as they're disappointed with 6 years of corruption under Bush, they're still not sure of the message of Democrats. So, I think we need to get their respect and their attention if we're to make any headway toward winning the presidency in 2008. There is still time to turn this around, IMO.
One of our biggest concerns as your constituents, and I think I speak for many Democrats, is that George W Bush has not been served with any articles of impeachment yet. If ever a president deserves to be charged, this one does. Even though we didn't win back the majority in the House yesterday, you and I both know that we can still serve him with Articles of Impeachment. Whether or not the charge goes anywhere is not as important as knowing that you at least tried....that you at least acknowledged what your constituents desperately want to happen....that you let the world know that the Democratic Party will not simply roll over and play dead anymore...like so many of you did with Alito.
Yesterday I voted along party lines straight down the list, as I always do. In 2008, my vote depends upon an impeachment attempt made in the near future. Without an impeachment attempt, you will lose my respect, and if you start losing the respect of lifelong Democrats like myself, then how can you ever hope to gain the respect of an entire country? Please get together with the brain trusts of this party and serve this president with impeachment charges ASAP. An impeachment attempt that crashes is better than no attempt at all. Let the country know that we DO have a message and a conscience. Thank you.
Very Sincerely, a lifelong Democrat who wishes to remain one... X X
