Wisconsin Lawmaker Got Death Threats for Upholding CCW Veto

We can’t say that we’re exactly shocked or surprised by this story from the Journal Times in Wisconsin, but we are pretty saddened by it. One of the lawmakers who changed his vote to uphold the veto of the concealed weapons bill has reported his wife has recieved death threats.

------------
A lawmaker who flipped his stance and voted to sustain the governor’s veto of a bill that would let people carry concealed weapons says his wife got death threats after the vote.

Rep. John Steinbrink, D-Pleasant Prairie, said his wife, Roberta, got two death threats via telephone shortly after the Assembly voted Tuesday afternoon to sustain Gov. Jim Doyle’s veto.

He said his wife was shaken by the calls.

“I know a lot of the gun owners in Kenosha and most of them are pretty good people and friends of mine,” Steinbrink said. “This was an unfortunate incident by several people who apparently don’t have the mental capabilities to carry a gun or possess one.”
-------------

Threatening the life of a lawmaker who actually stands up for the safety (and the actual desires, since most Wisconsin citizens didn’t want a CCW bill) of his constituents. That’s classy. Of course, Dave Zien did promise that “anyone that screws us on this legislation” would know they were “taking no prisoners.” Maybe whoever did this was simply following what they thought were NRA tactics.

We applaud Steinbrink for his decision to stand by the citizens of his state. The actions of those who threatened him are despicable, and we hope the police (who were also opposed to CCW) are able to find those responsible and bring them to justice. The state of Wisconsin is safer today than it would have been if the concealed weapons bill veto had been overridden and we have people like Steinbrink to thank for making that possible.

1. Kind of proves the point, doesn't it?
The last thing Wisconsin needs is a bunch of irrational gun nuts running around with concealed weapons. Obviously. Too bad our wingnut state legislature doesn't have anything better to do, like figuring out how to create more/better jobs, how to fix the UW hiring/wage freeze, how to get adequate health care to the state's poor, elederly and, increasingly, the middle class, how to fund its own pension system, and how to restore Wisconsin's public schools to their pre-Bush level of excellence without jacking up my property taxes any more than they've already been jacked up--50% in two years! No no--the legislature's priorities are letting people carry concealed weapons, banning gay marriage, and naming the official state tartan, for Chrissakes. What a pathetic bunch of pinheads.
