Senate Candidate Sheeler “Bush lied., People died. He needs to be tried"
Greetings DU members. We had an excellent exchangen with some great ideas. It is my intention to provide the following release to the media early next week. I wanted to share it with you first and get your opinions, suggestions, concurrence and edits. Successful releases usually need to remain below 500 words with 250 words preferred.

Let me know,

Carl
Sheeler for US Senate
www.carlsheeler.com
carl@carlsheeler.com

BTW, I seem to recall in the 9/11 Commission report that Bush received his Presidential Daily Briefing, a month before the Osama/Al Qaeda air attack, that there was intercepted traffic alerting him to this threat, but he did nothing. Does anyone have further information on this?

Providence, RI – U.S. Senate Candidate Carl Sheeler (D-RI) has challenged his Democratic running mates, Sheldon Whitehouse and Matt Brown, by mail and by phone to support his efforts to call on both Congressmen James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy to support US Representative John Conyers (D-MI) in his impeachment proceedings.

Sheeler, a Marine veteran and self-described 70’s style Democrat, has been tireless since July 2005 in his efforts to call for the withdrawal of our troops in Iraq: his opposition of Alito due to expansion of executive powers since his nomination in November; and, more recently, he had posted a billboard along I-95 that has an image of the U.S. Constitution in the background and in the foreground declares “Be Patriotic. Impeach Bush.”

Sheeler has now taken his challenge further and adlibbed Senator Lincoln Chafee’s Republican Primary candidate, Stephen Laffey. “In at least one thing, I agree with Mayor Laffey. Let’s be "the smallest state with the largest voice" and be the first “blue state” to unify behind a resolution that calls for the impeachment of President Bush. I requested our state’s U.S. Representatives show the leadership that over two-thirds of our citizens want. I’m asking them to support John Conyers, not because he’s a Democrat or that it’s a sure thing, but because it’s the right thing. Now, I am also calling on our General Assembly leadership in both our house and senate and its members to use their constitutional right to submit a joint resolution to Congress supporting my request.”

Sheeler pressed on, “In just the past two weeks following my last press conference, there has been additional testimony concerning the Bush administration’s lying about it’s knowledge of the levee breaking and mishandling of the Katrina aftermath. Republican leadership acknowledges President Bush lied about wiretapping; CIA executives have stated Bush lied about the reasons for declaring War in Iraq. The president lied that he had no association with special interests’ lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Bush has lied about being strong on defense; yet his military spending benefits contractors while short-changing the number of combat troops needed and reduces health benefits for our veterans. Bush lied that his wealth tax cuts would not endanger our budget surplus, but now we’re over $8 trillion in debt costing each of us over $25,000. Scooter Libby has testified he “outed” CIA spy, Valerie Plame at the risk of her life and others, with the knowledge and likely the direction of his superiors. Our citizens need a clear and unequivocal voice with the courage and conviction to say “The President Lied”. Short of a trail of bread crumbs and videotape, what else needs to be done to protect our citizens.”

4. All veeeery good, Carl.. .
you have the correct sense of how disgusted the people of RI have become with the Bush blatant-lying.

You're way ahead anyone else in the U.S.Senate race, as far as I'm concerned. . .and you'll get others' attention easily. . .keep the pressure on.

Go with your sound bite. . .

Bush lied. People died. He needs to be tried

29. Carl, contact Wes Clark's PAC, www.securingamerica.com
Wes has been endorsing and actively working for Dem. candidates for Congress, more so than anyone else I know of. And he'll want your support for President in 2008 when you're Senator Sheeler
(D-R.I.)

Sorry, can't vote for you, I live in CA

46. Never be sorry!
I gave my declaration speech at Hope High. You'd probably not recognize it now - sadly.

I have endeavored to send the following at the site you gave me but the site is not accepting messages right now.

Good morning. Our campaign has garnered the attention of many veterans, moderate and progressive democrats as well as others who believe America's democracy is slipping away. I have been fighting the entrenched Democrats who have made our two party system into a one party one and have asked Rhode Island's US Reps. Langevin and Kennedy to join US Rep. John Conyers in his efforts to promote impeachment proceedings of the president and his cabal of corruption. It is not an issue of whether it will suceed, which I believe it could with mounting public awareness and support, but because it's the right thing to do. That said, as a Marine vet, people now more than ever need candid conviction. The general knows this adn I believe I do.

I'd invite his contact of our campaign by first visiting www.carlsheeler.com, emailing me at carl@carlsheeler.com, or a phone call to 401-397-4618.

Carl
Sheeler for US Senate

CA is a big state, so you can really help by letting people you know about our campaign. It is a federal seat, so Californians benefit from a good elected official as much as RI'ers do.

Besides contacting Wes Clark (securingamerica.com) for Dem support, contact both Paul Hackett (hackettforohio.com) and James Webb (jameswebb.com running as Dem against Allen (R-VA)) since the four of you will not only consolidate a force against the Bush cabal but you all would wake up the dippy Dems for sure!

How was the attendance? What were the questions like? Do tell! BTW - keep us updated on all this. Feedback is useful - especially if you run over a "rut in the road." Many shrewd thinkers here who can offer input about how to deflect it or turn it back into an advantage.

I enjoy seeing the bad guys forced to eat their words, or take a taste of their own medicine, myself. Especially since they all seem so ill and under-nourished!

54. HEY CARL
This brings up a good point. There will come a time when during your campaign the TV cameras are rolling.

Don't miss that chance. Make SURE you say right to the cameras that Bush LIES. Not embellishes, stretches the truth, or misleads the American people. LIES.

Then when you tell them you are running in the name of the truth, it creates the contrast you need to win elections.

Be sure to tell the cameras what you have told us, and your army will grow and grow.

25. Fantastic press release. The only recommendation I would make is
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 03:43 PM by Catrina
to break up the paragraphs into 'sound-bite' sentences, eg:

Sheeler pressed on:

1) “In just the past two weeks following my last press conference, there has been additional testimony concerning the Bush administration’s lying about its knowledge of the levee breaking and mishandling of the Katrina aftermath...

2) Republican leadership acknowledges President Bush lied about wiretapping .....

3) CIA executives have stated Bush lied about the reasons for declaring War in Iraq.....

4) The president lied that he had no association with special interests’ lobbyist Jack Abramoff.....

5) Bush has lied about being strong on defense; yet his military spending benefits contractors while short-changing the number of combat troops needed and reduces health benefits for our veterans.....

6) Bush lied that his wealth tax cuts would not endanger our budget surplus, but now we’re over $8 trillion in debt costing each of us over $25,000.

7) Scooter Libby has testified he “outed” CIA spy, Valerie Plame at the risk of her life and others, with the knowledge and likely the direction of his superiors.....

Our citizens need a clear and unequivocal voice with the courage and conviction to say “The President Lied”. Short of a trail of bread crumbs and videotape, what else needs to be done to protect our citizens.”

And you might want to add that we now know that $9 billion of Iraq reconstruction funds, is simply gone.

Our media needs to be led around by the hand. If the paragraphs are too long, they will not read them ~ anyway, that's all I can think of ~ it's an excellent press release, imo ~ :-)

A sign like this runs $11000 a month, so that's 100 $110 contributions or for the math challenged 110 $100 contributions. I want to keep this sign up for the entire campaign and get more up as well. Can you help me with this by spreading the word? I like to look at it as owning a 1% interest of history - of course some of the monied folks are welcome to invest in a 10% interest!

Finally - a candidate who seeks input from the people.

I have shared your words with others and we all agree that you speak for us. And yes, we can all come up with little tweaks that might make the release a bit better; but then again, there's something about the raw passion and integrity that comes through in your words...

Just keep putting it out there in your own style - absent any work-over by word-smiths. It rings true just the way it is. We like your style.

a long time ago.

Has anyone called or emailed AAR? I bet Ed Schultz would interview him.

Randy Rhodes and maybe Stephanie Miller ~ if he has a campaign manager, they should contact Air America, imo.

.......

The Majority Report, together with Dailykos is featuring a veteran running for office every week.

Here's their notice on AAR ~

Every Tuesday night on The Majority Report.

The Majority Report and Dailykos.com have teamed up to profile Democratic military vets who've decided to take another step in public service and run for Congress.

Each Tuesday night on The Majority Report over the coming months, The Majority Report's Sam Seder and Markos Moulitsas of DailyKos.com will be introducing and checking in with soldiers who've had enough of Republican Washington and have decided to fight back.

Hhttp://shows.airamericaradio.com/majorityreport/

This week they are featuring a Navy Vet ~

Chris Carney is professor of political science at Penn State in Scranton and Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve, where he spent much of the last 5 and a half years serving either overseas, or at the Pentagon as a senior advisor on intelligence and counterterrorism issues.

“I am fed up with Washington politicians leaving most Americans behind while our national priorities are forgotten."

Hhttp://shows.airamericaradio.com/majorityreport/

Also Mike Malloy ~ I think he would love to interview him ~

If a lot of people send in his website, they will respond, I think ~

61. SHEELER ALERT: IMMEDIATE REQUEST PLEASE
Catrina is on the freakin' money. This is where your cyber clout can get exercised. Blitz these avenues where we go from cyber to mainstream media to get "OUR" word out. Start targeting one, then two and ... you get the idea. By hammering these media outlets, we can get the visibility and word to the public who's in a daze. We need to do this. NOW!

And, might as well start with the above and then any of you can bring up another well viewed or listened or read media. It's my goal it comes full circle to our outlets here in RI and they feel foolish if they don't cover the populists' voice(s).

Agreed! Let's rock! I'm ready! Are you?

37. Carl, the thing that's setting you apart from the rest
is you're not afraid to use the L word, as in "lied". All too often, criticism from the other Democrats toward Bush has been way too tempered. About the best the others have done is said Bush "mislead" us."Mislead" is simply way too soft. Now you're coming flat out and saying he LIED. The entire country needs to hear more of our spokespeople like yourself saying the very words, "lied" or "liar"...instead of "mislead", whenever it's in reference to this administration. We've had way too much beating around the bush, no pun intended. Thank you for speaking for us. My only advice I can think of right now is to continue doing what you're doing so effectively....staying on the offense!

39. Hello, I started some edits
I think made for a little smoother read with more "action-y" language:

Providence, RI – U.S. Senate Candidate Carl Sheeler (D-RI) has challenged his Democratic running mates, Sheldon Whitehouse and Matt Brown, to support him in calling on Congressmen James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy to stand with US Representative John Conyers (D-MI) in his impeachment proceedings.

Sheeler, a Marine veteran and self-described 70’s style Democrat, tirelessly called, since July 2005, for the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq; opposed the nomination of Alito due to dictatorial expansion of executive power; and, he recently had posted a billboard along I-95 that has an image of the U.S. Constitution and declares “Be Patriotic. Impeach Bush.”

Taking his challenge further, Sheeler has adlibbed Senator Lincoln Chafee’s Republican Primary opponent, Stephen Laffey: “In at least one thing, I agree with Mayor Laffey. Let’s be 'the smallest state with the largest voice' and be the first 'blue state' to unify behind a resolution that calls for the impeachment of President Bush.” ...

I ran out of steam at this point.

Some questions/concerns of mine:

Is "70's style Democrat" a well-known term? I was in kindergarten in '79 but I'm guessing that "70's style Democrat" might translate to "Democrat with balls."

It's not clear to me where all the quotation marks should be in the third paragraph.

In the first paragraph what do you mean by "running mates?" I've come to associate that term with VP candidate.

Thank you for running, and thanks for posting here.

The Neocons (PNACers) have been using the government to have their way. They have cajoled, wheedled, persuaded, and probably threatened various administrations, heads of CIA, etc. They are the force behind our foreign policy.

Until someone has the guts to stand up and expose them on a national level, they will continue exerting their influence on the government or via their think-tanks.

What do you propose I do from this starting point as a candidate to winning a primary and a general election to convince many spineless elected Dems and just as many corrupt GOP they're all bad and should start caring for the American public? How do I get the average person who will spend more time considering Everybody Loves Raymond than a 30 second sound bite relied upon to make a candidate choice assuming they go to the polls which is 20% in a primary and 50% in a general election? Cause the msg has to be a brief sound bite to hold the attention and a direct statement how it impacts them then and there. If you have the "way" I'd bottle that puppy and sell it.

103. That is the equivalent of Douglas Adams' "42" (the answer to life)
IMHO, the only thing that is going to wake Americans up to their apathy, selfishness, arrogance, narcissism, etc. is going to be a Great Depression that will surpass the one of the 1930s.

But, just keep it simple. Don't spout "I have a plan" and not go into a bit of details about that plan (as Kerry wouldn't do).

Personally, I would focus on moving priorities to domestic issues. I would work to expose the PNACers for their failed ideology which is near to bankrupting this nation due to the immense military spending. I think you'll find some choice video clips of Richard Perle in the 2nd part of The Power of Nightmares that prove the hypocrisy of the neocons and one from Part 3 that proves their utter arrogance and cluelessness (where Perle says people who don't think there was a link between Saddam and 9/11 are flat-out wrong). Sell your constituents that this administration has weakened our alliances with the rest of the world and made us look like the boy who cried wolf all while leaving our borders, ports, chemical/nuclear plants, railroads, and trucking industry completely vulnerable. The best offense is a good defense.

Then, focus on returning to balanced budgets. Bring up the bipartisan study that found that taxes must be raised and spending cut or else the US will fall into financial distress as what hit Argentina. Here's a link to the WaPo article:

Almost Unnoticed, Bipartisan Budget Anxiety
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/17/AR2005051701238_pf.html

Also, look at the cost of healthcare on American businesses. The Bush administration's $1 trillion gift to the drug companies for the Medicare prescription program is another example of a failed attempt at the Republican version of socialized medicine. Eliminating the tax cuts enacted (and pushed to be made permanent during a time of war...amazing, eh?) but yet relieving businesses of the burden of providing health coverage to their employees and instituting socialized healthcare, would allow the progressive tax structure to be re-balanced, free corporations' cash for capital investment, and allow the government to provide more cost-effective healthcare due to the economy of scale. This will send the insurance lobby into a tizzy but w/o major changes, we're headed for disaster. In conjunction with socialized healthcare would be one very tightly run yet expansive auditing system of that program to help cut down and eliminate fraud.

The last major social program, Social Security, can be kept 100% solvent for an extra 45 years or so simply by removing the income cap. That puts Social Security solvency well out past 2050. It's likely by that time the smaller workforce we have now supporting a larger base of retirees will change to more of an equilibrium or even reverse the ratio.

Defense, I suppose that could be considered a social program except that it's tailored to a select portion of America. Eliminate unnecessary programs: Space-based weapons, recall troops from other countries where they are no longer needed, and simply the cessation of the imperialistic foreign policies of the last several decades will help to greatly reduce the amount of money needed to pour into the Pentagon. 30% of our fiscal budget should not be needed for our nation's defense.

Surely your staff can condense some of that into some nice soundbites. :)

105. Excellent thoughts and if you spend time at my site...
.... you'll find domestic agenda is the priority and is funded by rolling back the 2001 taxes for the wealthy and increasing taxes for large corporations so that the profits reported to shareholders are the same they must reply upon when filing taxes. Corporate welfare is much more costly to America than social welfare, with neither always efficient.

41. Proposed revision
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 11:06 PM by pat_k
I realize it may be too late, but here's a proposed revision

------------ 400 Words ------------

Providence, RI – U.S. Senate Candidate Carl Sheeler (D-RI) is challenging his Democratic rivals, former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse and Secretary of State Matt Brown, to join him in urging Congressmen James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy to co-sponsor a bill introduced by Rep. John Conyers’ (D-MI) that would initiate an impeachment inquiry into abuses of power by the Bush administration.

Sheeler, a former Marine Captain who served in the first Gulf war, has demanded the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and called on Democratic leaders to block the nomination of Samuel Alito due to his support for the vast unitary authoritarian executive power claimed by Republicans.

Capt. Sheeler wants Rhode Island to lead the effort to impeach President Bush. In addition to asking the state's U.S. Representatives to "show the leadership that over two-thirds of our citizens want" and "support John Conyers, not because he's a Democrat ... but because it's the right thing," he has also called for members of the Rhode Island General Assembly to exercise their right under Section 603 of the United States House Rules to initiate impeachment proceedings by transmitting charges to Congress in a joint resolution.

Referring to the tagline ("The Smallest State - The Strongest Voice") coined by Republican Mayor of Cranston and Senate candidate Stephen Laffey, Sheeler asserted that "In at least one thing, I agree with Mayor Laffey, let's be the smallest state with the largest voice."

Sheeler went on to say:

"In just the past two weeks there has been additional testimony concerning the Bush administration’s lying about its knowledge of the levees breaking and mishandling of the Katrina aftermath.

"Republican leadership acknowledges President Bush lied about wiretapping; CIA executives have stated Bush lied about the reasons for declaring War in Iraq. “The president lied that he had no association with lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"Bush has lied about being strong on defense … his military spending benefits contractors, while short-changing the number of combat troops needed and reduces health benefits for our veterans. “Bush lied that his wealth tax cuts would not endanger our budget surplus, but now we’re over $8 trillion in debt costing each of us over $25,000.

"Our citizens need a clear and unequivocal voice with the courage and conviction to say 'The President Lied.'"

The Sheeler for U.S. Senate Campaign has recently erected a billboard along I-95 that declares "Be Patriotic. Impeach Bush."

43. I don't know if you want help like this, but...
For a press release, the more professional the better, right?
I have a few suggestions that may make your great release a little bit cleaner.
If you hate me after you read my nits, I totally understand. Nobody likes a nit-picker. :)

Sheeler, a Marine veteran and self-described 70’s style Democrat, has been tireless

no apostrophe in 70s. Write it just like I did. Nobody ever believes me but it's true.

The above 'graph is awkward. Long sentences make it more difficult to read. Found a few punctuation things too. Here's a different option if you want it:

Sheeler, a Marine veteran and self-described 70s style Democrat, has been tireless since July, 2005, in his efforts to call for the withdrawal of our troops in Iraq. Since Alito was nominated in November, Sheeler has opposed him due to the expansion of executive powers. More recently, Sheeler posted a billboard along I-95. The billboard has an image of the U.S. Constitution in the background, and in the foreground it declares, "Be Patriotic. Impeach Bush."

3rd 'graph -- it's ad-libbed, not adlibbed.

The president lied that he had no association with special interests’ lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

I suggest, "The president lied when he said that he had no association..." If you are not comfortable saying 'when he said', you can substitute 'implied' or some other word. Same goes for the sentence that follows and starts the same way.

Bush has lied about being strong on defense;
I suggest cutting the word 'has'. Bush lied... is much more powerful, and less passive. Also, the semi-colon should be a comma.

“The President Lied”. Punctuation goes in front of double quotes. It goes behind single quotes.

66. Some 911 Info for "Sheeler"
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 11:47 AM by mzmolly
Reading Richard Clarke's book is a great beginning, here is some info:

Clarke, a veteran Washington insider who had advised presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush, dissects each man's approach to terrorism but levels the harshest criticism at the latter Bush and his advisor's who, Clarke asserts, failed to take terrorism and Al-Qaeda seriously. Clarke details how, in light of mounting intelligence of the danger Al-Qaeda presented, his urgent requests to move terrorism up the list of priorities in the early days of the administration were met with apathy and procrastination and how, after the attacks took place, Bush and key figures such as Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Dick Cheney turned their attention almost immediately to Iraq, a nation not involved in the attacks. Against All Enemies takes the reader inside the Beltway beginning with the Reagan administration, who failed to retaliate against the 1982 Beirut bombings, fueling the perception around the world that the United States was vulnerable to such attacks. Terrorism becomes a growing but largely ignored threat under the first President Bush, whom Clarke cites for his failure to eliminate Saddam Hussein, thereby necessitating a continued American presence in Saudi Arabia that further inflamed anti-American sentiment. Clinton, according to Clarke, understood the gravity of the situation and became increasingly obsessed with stopping Al-Qaeda.

Thank you so much for what you are doing to take back our country. I thank you, my children thank you, and my children's children will thank you.

I have an idea for you- that impeachment billboard is key. Instead of raising funds for your campaign, you could raise funds specifically to put up more billboards everywhere. The response to the billboards will give you free press, which is less money you will have to spend on commercials.

Also, if you could make it possible for other impeachment candidates to use the billboard you created for their campaigns...we could donate and get these all over the country!

!keep on keepin on! I will definately spread the word about you.

Thank you. I want to have this billboard outlast Bush and his cronies and put as many up as I can in RI. Now that is something we can do together. Thank you.

93. Also, as a Senator, will you push for reform, as a start, at the BLS?
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 04:44 PM by Roland99
Will you push for reform at the Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, to get the unemployment numbers to represent something meaningful?

Will you also demand an investigation into the possibility of government-sponsored propping up of the stock markets?

I'd love to see this administration impeached but there's more to being a Senator than being a one-trick pony.

98. Agreed. GiGo rules and largest priorities are most preferred
GiGo Is garbage in garbage out. One man can make a difference, but choosing the best battles for the greatest positive results is preferred than being Don Qixote, no?

94. Carl, look what I posted on the DCCC web site
I say its time to take the gloves off. Democrats seem to be worried about the backlash from Faux News, Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. Listen to your base. Want to see how we feel? Visit the web site of Carl Sheeler, Senate candidate from R.I at:
www.carlsheeler.com
This is how your base feels. We are tired of being kicked around by the republicans. Where is the leadership? We've got all of these scandals going on with the republicans. We need to take advantage. Lets not be wishy washy on this. Lot's of veterans are running for office as Democrats. We need to support them every way that we can, especially when the republicans try to "Swift Boat" them.

offer some small input to your (I mean, OUR) cause.

"yet his military spending benefits contractors while short-changing the number of combat troops needed and reduces health benefits for our veterans."

Suggest: "yet his military spending has enriched certain contractors while scrimping on life saving armor for our under-manned forces and treats our brave veterans with disdain by whitling their health benefits."

I don't know if this can be used in your release as it appears to be quoting something you already said. But, maybe it can be used in a future statement.

P.S. If Cheney invites you on hunting party - DON'T GO!
