NEW YORK Let's begin with a brief case study in how the cynical, superficial American media (that's us) can distort the lives of political figures and their families.

Ah, but then Schiff lets her guard down for an instant -- despite a lifetime of watching journalists turn Al and Tipper Gore into unrecognizable caricatures of the parents she knows and loves -- and lets slip something we can twist into a sexier lead.
Why did she really write this book? Hey, isn't it obvious?
It's because her mom wouldn't let her watch "Mighty Mouse" as a kid.


Schiff says she was inspired to write "Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America" in part because of the cartoon "Mighty Mouse."

Just losing would have been bad enough. But losing the way Al Gore lost . . . well, it was "a very dark time."
It got worse with 9/11 (Schiff and her family were in Manhattan that day) and the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. She was stunned by the way people who disagreed with the administration's decision to go to war or even questioned the way the war was to be conducted were "shut up and shouted down and pushed aside and more or less called traitors."

We ask what she found most surprising about the lives of these nine women who fought racism, child labor, industrial poisoning and the indifference of society toward the needs of the poor? The answer comes with a short laugh.

"I was surprised -- and sort of oddly exhilarated -- by the venom in the established media toward them," Schiff says.

4. This was the exchange from the show that struck me although I'm not

sure that Tweety actually "got" the point -- but then, what's new?

MATTHEWS: Why should a conservative read your book? It‘s called “Lighting the Way,” it‘s about women and the progress they‘ve made for America from small places to big movements, the big actions. Why should a conservative read this book?

SCHIFF: Because I think it illustrates the fact that the minority viewpoint is often prescient and just, and we can look back and see how in times past, it‘s been someone raising a point against segregation, against child labor, against pollution without regulation, who was shouted down and pushed aside, maybe called a communist, and it‘s important that we recognize that and respect and we should engage them.

MATTHEWS: I‘m totally with you. I think you‘re dead right. It‘s the grassroots that matter.

The point wasn't that grassroots matter. It was that you should listen to the minority viewpoint which fights the mainstream thought. Tweety is one of the biggest pushers of the mainstream thought aka "conventional wisdom"; frequently mocking the minority viewpoint.

Al was screwed, hell all of us, screwed by Bush. We could have had a president with a BRAIN. I think about how it must've felt having all those wingnuts yelling "soreloserman" outside their house. A lesser man, such as myself, would have done something very serious to stop it.
