Al Franken for Senator

AL FRANKEN FOR SENATOR

February 13, 2006 -- AL Franken, the "Satur day Night Live" alum and Bill O'Reilly nemesis, is inching closer to a run for the U.S. Senate in 2008.

Franken, who has a daily radio show on the liberal Air America network, was based in New York until a last month, when he quietly picked up and moved his residence and his show to Minneapolis.

...

"I'm learning — traveling within Minnesota, talking to people. I've been raising money for candidates in Minnesota and around the country."

Franken has already raised $168,000 in just over two months, according to a campaign-finance report. So far, he has given the money to six other liberal candidates — a classic strategy for politicians trying to build up a position for themselves within the party.

1. Can you imagine someone
debating him? Holy shit, they'd be bleeding when he got done and the audience would be roaring!

2. Not just someone debtating him but Norm "The Weasel" Coleman
That's who Franken is planning to run against.

After Normie's performance last week with Michael Brown we can be pretty sure it would be a blood bath. I imagine the weasel would find someway to duck any debates.

5. nothing compared
The way George Galloway stomped a mudhole in Coleman and proceeded to walk it dry. Wow was that funny.

7. I'll make it a point to watch those debates--CSPAN will probably reach
their largest audience EVER for that contest!

Norm will have a hard time ducking...he'll be painted as a coward. He'll just have to get up there and pray he doesn't get too bloodied. Either that, or try to arrange the debates so that they are up against some popular TV show, and hope that TIVO, VCRs, and them damn internets don't foil him up too much!

When Heckuvajob Brownie can make Norm look like an unmitigated ass, he's got some serious trouble. And it'll be time to drag out his glamour-shots from that dentist he got free teeth from!!!

18. I can picture Sen. Franken
mimicking every right-wing Repuke right on the Senate floor, pissing them off to the nth degree--and the gallery having a laugh in the process!

3. He would have to quit AAR. I like Al. He would be a good senator.
Maybe we could get Rachel Maddow to replace him. :)

4. I'd miss him at AAR so much. But I think you're right.
The management at AAR are grooming Rachel to take his spot.

11. Are you sure?
I saw them doing their syndication division of Hartmann's show as a sign that he'll be the one to replace Al. I also think that it depends on what happens this next 12-15 months. Rachel is definetely a rising star among Liberal pundits(sorry I don't have a better word to describe her) and if her stock continues to rise I don't think they can keep her at 7-9

12. Not sure. I have no inside info. But from articles in the NY Times and
others saying that Rachel is AAR's shining star, and Al hand-picking Rachel to pinch hit for him when he was on the USO tour, I'd venture a good guess.

I think that there's definitely a place on AAR for Thom Hartmann, but they might want someone a little more lively for the 12-3 slot.

17. Rachel used to host w/ 2 others in the 9-12 time slot.
Chuck D, Liz Winstead (sp?) & Rachel. They were great! Then Jerry Springer. Not so great (not totally awful but very middle American, middle of the road.) We DUers LOVE Rachel!

8. It would be GREAT
Al is the perfect person to run against slimy Norm Coleman. Read his chapter in "Lies" about the Wellstone funeral - his righteous and grieved outrage over the pukes' desecration of Wellstone's memory makes him the perfect choice.

good for the senate and MN, sad for AAR. But, MAN the senate floor debates will be fun to watch - against Normie especially.

Being a moderate/centrist is exactly why Franken will get the nod.
