HERE IT IS! SD House Approves Abortion Ban

http://www.keloland.com/NewsDetail2817.cfm?Id=0,45916

The South Dakota House has passed a bill that would nearly ban all abortions in the state, ushering the issue to the state Senate.

Supporters are pushing the measure in hopes of drawing a legal challenge that will cause the US Supreme Court to reverse its 1973 decision legalizing abortion.

The bill banning all abortions in South Dakota was passed 47-to-22 in the House.

Amendments aimed at carving out exemptions for rape, incest and the health of women were rejected.

The bill does contain a loophole that allows abortions if women are in danger of dying. Doctors who do those abortions could not be prosecuted.

the religiously insane are winning

women have lost again

I want revenge on the 47

(how I hate to post this news - makes my heart hurt. it's a good thing someone gave me a valentine heart today)

13. That too.
I actually mailed a coathanger, all folded up, to the DNC a couple weeks ago when I got a donation letter just after Scalito was approved. I added a note saying that their daughters were going to need them because of the Dems' cowardice.

4. as long as there are no exceptions for a woman's healthy, it will lose
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 01:47 PM by AtomicKitten
The Supremes have consistently ruled unconstitutional bans that do not make exceptions for a woman's health, yet the anti-abortion nutjobs consistently keep leaving it out of their legislation.

The states have been systematically restricting access for years.

Expect case after case to hit the Supremes now that the rightwing bent has been established.

5. They couldn't wait to rush this tripe up the chain could they?
Why, I feel a need to drop by the TARAL office tomorrow & donate a few hours. Most non profits usually can use a little free IT work or data entry or janitorial services (I'm incredibly versatile).

6. This is NOT bad news
far from it. It's not going to make it to the SC, and it'll get knocked down in its entirety by the Federal Courts. Whatsmore, it's a fantastic wake up call. It demonstrates to all of the country how really rabid the anti-choice crowd is. BTW, it may not even make it through the SD Senate. It didn't last time. And don't worry about posting it, it's been posted about 10 times since Friday.

9. I agree, but for different reasons
I disagree that this will never make it to the Supreme Court. I believe it will. However, I believe it is a good thing because it will ultimately be the issue that screws the Republican party. Like the education board members in Kansas that banned the teaching of evolution, rabidly pro-life politicians are tolerated by voters only until they get what they want. Then they get voted out by an angry majority.

7. Well, all SD women will have to emigrate
leaving SD a very geographically expansive "males-only" club.

are there any south dakota duers that can fill us in on the senate -- what chance does the bill have there?

is there any analysis of the bill's viability before the supremes?

14. Well, at least they beat Ohio to it
Ohio was going to be the poster child for the SCOTUS challenge on Roe v Wade, but, their candidates are too at risk right now, so they must have passed the baton to SD.

17. Ohio sure doesn't need to be a poster child
for Roe v Wade. We have enough notoriety to last us Buckeyes a long time.

15. Good... I hope it passes....
This fight has festered too long. If the Rethugs wish to end Roe V Wade, I say we let them. If they truly believe that Roe V. Wade is an immoral ruling, then let's hash it out in the streets of America. I hope they do overturn it and they also get to reap the whirlwind. If those fucking idiots want to commit political suicide, we should be egging them on not lamenting over the inevitable. Once 5 or 6 teenaged girls die from a back-alley abortion, it'll make the Schaivo Debacle look pale in comparison.

18. Sure, who cares about 5 or 6 dead teenagers?
While we're at it--let's bring back the draft. We might be able to use 500 or 600 dead draftees to make a political point.

19. The second Alito was sworn in, those 5 or 6 teenagers were tombstoned...
not by me but by our leadership. If that's not a political reality, I don't know what is.

25. A remote but useful political reality for you, Sir.
By the way, isn't "Tombstoning" what happens to trolls here? I haven't seen the word used about actual dead humans.

23. I can't wait for the photo op with thousands of women raped and
pregnant due to incest or some other unfortunate situation standing next to bush with hormones raging and their bodies forced to carry unwanted pregnancies. Seeds of evil is what the right wing want women to deliver. Pretty soon, rape will be legal if religious nut jobs had their say. The fundamentalist are not any different from the taliban.

24. Didn't take them long, did it
first they'll come for us, the women, then they'll come for the gays, then the blacks, then the non-Christians...and they'll be coming for the American worker and the environment, you can bet on that.

This will be the end of "freedom" for everyone but the rich white Christian males.
